I have traveled through jasper many times this year and a few times in the last 2 weeks. The town was surrounded by dead trees. As painful as the loss is knowing that jasper and the province did nothing to mitigate the fire hazards. A fire break could have easily surrounded the town. If I were a resident I would be so angry at the failure of jasper council and the province.

Why were no fire guards created?? Insufficient funding from the National Parks? Will Banff be next?
  • @gary4760
How do you think he feels? What a heartless question!

Reminds me of the devastating wildfire that destroyed Lahaina last year.

The only help should be stopping the fires outright, rather than hand out blankets to the survivors and burying the dead!

We know that transportation routes through this area will be of the highest of priority after this devastation , just look what happened to the town of Lytton.
  • I grew up in Jasper. I have friend who still live there. This is horrific thing that will take generations to recover from.

This what i discovered on the alberta government websites. A mandate on firesmart Community members, community leaders, industry and all levels of government have a responsibility to lessen the effects of wildfire. FireSmart is the implementation of both prevention and mitigation measures to reduce wildfire threat to Albertans and their communities while balancing the benefits of wildfire on the landscape. In my opinion fire breaks should have been installed years agoaround towns and power infrastructure. Let's protect other towns I feel Premier Smith will examine causes against old government fire management and fix it as she has been doing!
  • Beautiful Jasper, my heart goes out to everyone impacted. Such tragic news
  • AB needs assistance with fighting these fires = given. The province is requesting assistance from the CAF = understandable. Yet, Poliviere does not commit to funding the CAF should he win the PM Office = Wrong! Support our military members. Canadians need a strong military.
