I recently discovered Nile. Immediately bought a 7-string guitar and tuned it to drop A, just to play Lashed to the slave stick. I have no idea how they can be so good, yet so many people have never heard of them.

Yes, a Nile ranking and review. One of my all time favorites in death metal. I love how their lyrics deal with ancient Egyptian mythology and history and they even incorporate Middle Eastern styles of music in their already amazing style of technical/brutal death metal. Aside from one album (due the production, the musicianship is amazing), I think all their albums are great and I'm looking forward to their new album. Here would be my rating of each album: Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka: 3.75/5 Black Seeds of Vengeance: 4/5 In Their Darkened Shrines: 4.5/5 Annihilation of the Wicked: 5/5 Ithyphallic: 4.75/5 Those Whom the Gods Detest: 4.5/5 At the Gate of Sethu: 2/5 What Should Not Be Unearthed: 4/5 Vile Nilotic Rites: 4.25/5

I'm a drummer and George Kollias is my new hero. Dude is a fucking jackhammer.
  • Can’t wait to do the Nile Discog run very soon. They have a very unique take on Technical Death Metal with the added Egyptian influence. Annihilation of the wicked is one of my favorite death metal albums.

I remember back in 2003, I had bought some random CD’s, not really knowing what any of them was and one of those CD’s were In Their Darkened Shrines. I was absolutely blown away by the atmosphere. I was laying in total darkness with headphones on and was taken on a journey. Just remember how big of an impact that album had on me. 🐍

I love these videos of you reviewing discography’s. You helped me get into Dying Fetus and Cattle Decapitation. Been spinning Death Atlas all week!

I couldn’t clock fast enough once I saw “Nile” in the title!

Black Seeds of Vengeance (4/5) 5. Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (4/5) 6. Vile Nilotic Rites (4/5) 7. What Should Not Be Unearthed (3.5/5) 8. Ithyphallic (3/5) 9. At the Gate of Sethu (2.5/5)

I think Those Who The God's Detest is easily top 3 albums for Nile. I definitely agree with most things you said about the rest.
  • @Flugmorph
Those Whom is their magnum opus imo. I think their songwriting chops peaked there. They are my favorite dm band in general though and i can respect all kinds of opinions on them as long as it is recognized that they are a pretty amazing and unique band. i often get the feeling that a lot of the dislike they garner from dm fans is just caused by them not being a late 80s/early 90s band and having folk influences.

Brian Kingsland, who joined on ‘Vile..’, has done vocals for my band.. He’s awesome, and a good guy too.. The new stuff sounds promising
  • @SimS-uh2fg
My favourites : 1 - Darkened 2 - Annihilation 3 - Catacombs 4 - Detest 5 - Nilotic 6..... the rest But they are all very good, Nile is god tier.
  • @bentarpey8666
Annihilation was my introduction to the band and I think is still my favourite. Followed closely by For those whome the gods detest and in their darkened shrines. Vile nilotic rites was very reminiscent of annihilation in a number of ways and is an absolute banger. Glad you immersed yourself in their discography.
  • Well, in my personal Nile's discography, the top spots are taken by "darkened shrines" and "those whom the gods...", with the top spot shifting. 3rd place "annihilation..."
  • @chillyinalberta
Thanks for the nile rundown. Didn't know I missed these guys so much. Pumped to go back through the list. Annihilation has always been my go to.
  • @Dreamwheel81
Just wanted to flag as it wasn’t mentioned - the opening of the Rameses Bringer of War is heavily, if not entirely, inspired by Holst’s Planets suite, “Mars” in particular, naturally
  • @fari8034
FUCK YEA!!!! My fav band of all times I remember the first Nile review of yours and I very much hoped that you would find time to check out the rest. So glad you did. My top three would be Annihilation of the Wicked, Those whom the gods detest and Ithyphallic. I’d also put what blabla unearthed as their worst. Happy owner of a limited first press of Annihilation of the wicked.
