Metallica or Megadeth? Who’s The Thrash Metal Boss?

Metallica? Or Megadeth? It’s a question that every metalhead has come across and asked themselves since the mid-80s. During that era, Metallica and Megadeth were instrumental in pioneering the genre of thrash. But while Metallica was motivated to forge their own brand of metal, Megadeth was driven by the anger of its frontman, Dave Mustaine, towards his former band, Metallica.

So who among the two can be considered the thrash metal boss, and why? Is it the more popular Metallica, or the more prolific Megadeth? Keep watching until the end as we discuss the music of both Metallica and Megadeth, from their thrash roots in the 80s to their gradual evolution as the years went by, and we settle the score once and for all as to who are the undisputed kings of thrash.

Sometimes I think, out of frustration, that I would accept that they don't induct Megadeth into the Hall of Fame, but at least Dave. He is a key pillar of the entire metal scene since his days with Metallica. Anyway, Megadeth deserves to be in the hall of fame, let's hope Dave lives to see it.
  • Mustaine had a lot more family issues that most would completely shut down from! He kept pushing and survived the hell! So I give him a lot of respect!!

For me Megadeth is the better band by a million miles. I’m a much younger fan being 16, but I’ve listened to Metallica for about 5-6 years and just thought their stuff was good. I started listening to megadeth in 2022, and the first song was symphony of destruction. I was blown away. The next song was holy wars and from then on I knew megadeth was the best band I’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to every album thousands of times and I’ve even started playing guitar because of megadeth. So yeah, megadeth wins it for me
  • I LOVE both. I will not choose between the two. They're both 2 of the 4 Thrash pillars. While I enjoy Anthrax & Slayer, Metallica (particularly with Cliff Burton) & Megadeth will always be my favorite.

So Far So Good So What is so underrated - my favorite Megadeth album
  • For those who are not really into metal it's Metallica, but for those who are it's Slayer. I went to big 4 concert and everyone went wild when Slayer played. 🤘

I've loved, followed Megadeth for decades. I rarely mention the latter. Maybe give a band called LOVEBITES a try. They just released a new song called "Dissonance" it's BRUTAL!

Rust in Peace was the best technical masterpiece thrash metal album ever as far as I'm concerned. Obviously Master of Puppets was a monster of an album in it's own right, but the technicality of RIP was pure God Mode. I'm glad they kicked Dave out, otherwise we wouldn't have these two great bands. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if Dave remained in Metallica, as I think he's a much better thrash guitarist than Kirk. And perhaps they wouldn't have strayed so far away from their roots... Glad Metallica have come back to their roots, as I love their last two albums. And you have to give it up to them, those guys are playing very technical and fast music at the age they are at. Bravo. Tallica and Deth both for the win. But, it should have been the Big 5... As Testament should have been in that lineup IMO.
  • I would say the Deth. Simply because Dave kept it fresh by a revolving door of musos and therefore the thrash was always evolving. Tallica haven't evolved since MOP. They sold out and commercialised their sound for a mainstream audience. Megadeth tried with Risk but failed. That was their only weak moment apart from Super Collider but most of their catalogue is good solid thrash/metal. They're also much better musicians. Virtuosos.Tallica ain't! Also prefer Dave's vocals. They're more distinctive than James with his yeah yeah yeah which gets a bit tedious.

Great video. Your Right for me Megadeth 🤘

I love both bands equally after listening to both band's entire discographies from front to back... HOWEVER, Rust In Peace is the best album from either band's discography, with Ride The Lightning being a neck-and-neck second. However overall, they're basically the same in terms of enjoyment.

There is no Thrash Metal without Dave Mustaine--Scott Ian, I think Scott's Comment sums it all up, not to mention Dave personally had dealings with 3 of the big 4 bands, ( Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer). working with Slayers K.K. on Megadeths 1st tour, and of course his contributions to Metallica.
