Anneliese Marie "Anne" Frank (June 12, 1929 - February or March 1945) was a German-born Jewish girl who kept a diary and used its pages to commit to paper her life in hiding from Nazi oppression during the time of the German occupation of the Netherlands.

She was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and when she was four years old, her family moved to the Netherlands after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party gained control over Germany. But by 1942, Anne and her family went into hiding in Amsterdam and remained in that situation for just over two years until they were discovered and arrested by the Gestapo in 1944.

During the time the family was in hiding, Anne used the diary she'd received as a birthday present in 1942 to write down her daily experiences during this time of tremendous hardship and adversity.

Following the family's arrest, Anne and her sister Margot spent time at Auschwitz Concentration Camp, and we're later transferred to Bergen-Belsen. It was there that the sisters both died of typhus. Anne was only 15 years old at the time of her death.

Otto, Anne's father, was the only member of the family to survive World War II. After the war, he returned to Amsterdam to find out that Anne's diary had been preserved by two of his secretaries. Otto remembered how much Anne desired to be an author, so he honored his daughter's wishes by having it published in Dutch in 1947. Anne's story went on to be published in English in 1952, titled, "The Diary of a Young Girl." Today, it has been translated into over 70 languages.

The Dutch Canadian Club of Edmonton commissioned this striking statue of Anne Frank and arranged for it to be installed on the grounds of the Light Horse Park in Old Strathcona. The statue was unveiled in a ceremony held on August 8, 2021, as a commemoration of Canada's role in liberating the Netherlands from Nazi tyranny.

This statue is a replica of a work done in 1960 by Dutch sculptor Pieter d'Hont.

Light Horse Park is located at 10324 85 Avenue, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
