Corrupt Dialysis Industry Exposed... "How to Make a Killing" Book Review
Published 2024-02-18
The book lays out the story of dialysis from its invention around the time of World War 2 to its eventual coverage by Medicare in 1972.
The book goes on to chronicle the consolidation of many dialysis companies into two... DaVita and Fresenius, which control over 80% of the US dialysis market.
The book describes the abuses against dialysis patients including being abandoned by their dialysis center when they speak up about their care.
Lessons from "How to Make a Killing"
1. Vulnerable patients are exploited when A) there is a lack of competition or B) regulatory capture dissuades the government from protecting patients they way it should
2. Individual Advocacy--speaking up, making others uncomfortable, being the 'squeaky wheel'--is necessary to improve a patient's dialysis care.

Thank you, Dr. Bricker! I always enjoy your intelligent encapsulations of complex healthcare problems in just a few minutes, breaking them down to their essentials. I would have sworn that my book couldn't be summarized in 8 minutes, but you've proved me wrong -- fantastic job!

Davita nephrologists are also impeding patients from getting on kidney transplant waitlist so that they remain on dialysis as long as possible. Cleveland clinic did a study

I work in the dialysis industry. I would like to know more about what someone with experience in the healthcare industry thinks about dialysis. It was nice to see you cover the topic.

This is so disturbing on so many levels.

Regulatory capture keeps a lot of people warm at night. 1,800 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets under Toile de Jouy duvet covers.

Thanks for this excellent overarching example, based on Tom Mueller's book "How to Make a Killing". It is reflective of Warren Buffet's description of the U.S. Healthcare System as a Tapeworm on our economy and a threat to our national competitiveness. From what I have observed this is enabled by the symbiotic relationships between all the elements of the Medical Industrial Complex generating a Fly Wheel of Greed. Unsustainable and ripe for disintermediation and disruption. As you commented, we need more squeaky wheels and to raise public awareness of how we are being exploited, enabled by regulatory capture and borderline or blatant violations of antitrust laws and demand reforms be made to stop feeding the beast, before it is too late.

I wonder why Fresenius stock has been such a dog, down 50% over the past 5 years, especially if they're a duopoly and 'making a killing'.

Now that you have improved audio quality with a lav mic and better vocal control, congruent body language / hand gestures will make you even more convincing. Keep up the good work!

There's nothing wrong with making a profit but I just can't understand how these senior managers are so unnecessarily nasty, cruel and greedy. Don't they have blood in their veins? Don't they have family members that they worry this might happen to?

Could people of the public send in a comment in the final rule (I guess it would be outpatient) complaining about these things because it should affect reimbursement because of low quality.

Does this seem like an example of crisis theory playing itself out to anyone else?
