How I write CHORDS and HARMONIES! (and how you can too!)

Published 2024-05-27
Heyo! Want to see how I write chords and harmonies?? Welcome back to another video showing my writing process! My last video like this was so well received, I thought it would be fun to make more! So here is me showing my thought process behind it all, combining my personal experiences and what I learned in school.

These videos are meant to be a quick, somewhat broad look at music ideas to hopefully give you some help or inspiration for your own creative ventures. Also just for fun, haha, since I like making them and like talking about music!
So yeah, I hope my way of doing things can be helpful to you, or at least entertaining!

My melody-writing video:
   • How I write my MELODIES! (and how you...

(Also, sorry for my whack quality of a voice-over. I just talk into my phone, but I tried out some free compression this time, so I hope it's an improvement from the last one!)

Thank you all so much for listening!

What i've learned from this video: The reason my chords still suck is because i don't have an audience of penguins laying around.

That tip about using unstable notes for the harmony when the melody and chords use stable ones was my favorite tip from this video - it's SO hard for me to break out of the pattern of just using the 3 and 5 of whatever note the melody is currently playing for my harmonies, lol

great video! for me, what makes a song really amazing is almost always the relationship between the chords and the melody(s) - i feel that is where a lot of the power lies, even if the listener isn’t consciously realizing it. plus, i think that stability and instability is one of the most intuitively accessible aspects of writing music, which makes it even more fun. chords are my fav!!

Creating music must be one of the most fun things i ever did in my life
  • Yet another informative video, I really enjoyed it! Aweasome job! This brings me back, one of the few things I retained knowlodge of from when I played the keyboard is probably knowing about chords and such, never got as far as to creating my own stuff, but I still remember them as a core knowlodge in my head, so this was a nice trip down memory lane! As for the voice-over audio as one mentioned before, I think it just feels a bit more muffled than last time, can't say its bad, just different overall, which can be fine specially since you're trying out new stuff for it! And oh my, I was gonna congratulate you for 700 subscribers and now you're past 800?! My free time can't keep up, at this point next time I check you might be at a thousand! great job honestly, very well deserved, I hope your talent keeps being recognized more and more!:chillwcat::yougotthis: I also hope your penguins have been learning as much as us from this!:penguin-blue-waving-tear:

another cool voicing I like is just stacking fifths and fourths, like barry harris voicing (say for A minor A E B C G D played as a large chord voicing) very simple layout but gives such a distinct sound, great video, love you voice

that piano chord and harmony example made me want to learn it way more

Voice Audio's a clear lv up! Gotta say, I do enjoy these vids on personally watching another artist in their journey, both drawn and musically. Gives me a push to post more of my works on Soundcloud too!

5:34 this is too true for me. I remember being excited to start making my own songs after learning the basics of music theory and getting a DAW, not realizing that there's a lot more to it, and I got overwhelmed very much, very quickly, to the point where I almost quit Anyways, this was a good video, thank you! It definitely helped me to understand harmonizing a little more, which is a topic I haven't studied much

Your passion for music making is palpable! I'd love to see more of these "how the sauce is made" type videos! As an aside, did you play an instrument before producing, or have you always used a daw?
  • thank you so much your vids have really helped me with my music making stuffs. may you have all the french fries
