I think licks are useful for those of us just not inspired to improvisation or that lack imagination. If you have enough licks you can use them in different situations to not end up sounding stale. But I understand it's best to play according to the scale of the key that the song is in. I know the major scales but thinking something up off the top of my head as a lead break just doesn't come easy. So licks become very useful as a guide for me.

The mando is made to do phrase runs and fill ins all over the place. Try not to repeat these licks during a tune. Pay attention where the next part of the melody might take you as you end a vocal phrase. Endless possibilites, if you fool around enough with a melody.
