  • "I don't know why they keep throwing rocks in here"... that made my day!! I have ducks too and they are hilarious.
  • Got to show this to my husband! He has been struggling emptying out the two kids pools we have for our geese for several years now. Now even I could do this!
  • I use the same kind of pool for my ducks.  I used to drain it on to my vegetable and fruit gardens thinking it was good fertilizer, but it ended up toxifying my soil.  The pH became too alkaline and I had to add sulfur every 3 months for a year until anything would grow in the soil again.  I now use a sump pump and pump it into the sewer.  I still spray it on my gardens, but only 1-2 times per year.  When nearly empty, I lift the kiddie pool up and scrub it out with animal-safe cleanser.  The edges crack after a couple of years.  As a result, I have to buy a new kiddie pool every 2-3 years.
  • This is so simple and so brilliant! I'm going to do that for my kid's wading pool.
  • They do so love to put rocks in their water ! or knows why, but my geese also do it... I had drains also....finally I gave up and just get heavy duty kid ponds or those cement mixing containers at Home Depot and dump them.... (I do have more than a dozen as I raise them)... I put plastic around the pools or wood to keep them cleaner...but they do so like to make mud!) Or put their food in it ...they are ducks.... We had a 4" drain in one and they still clogged it and I got tired of reaching my hand down there in it..... If you can find those turtle pool/sandbox for kids they are thicker and last for years.... the blue pools only last a year or 2 at most.If you get them on sale at end of summer you can buy more and double them up , it makes them thicker and less likely to crack at the bends....but they can't take the suns rays as well as the heavier sandbox type.

Great Idea! .... I showed my wife your video and off to town we went total investment less than $40 ... only thing is that we had to spray the bottom of the pool around the fitting with flex seal because there was a small leak ..I bought my daughter two ducks for her birthday ..I didn't know that they would grow so fast!

I raise ducks and have drains on all of my ponds, I use 2" PVC and have a ball valve at end on outside so you never have to go in and it don't clog. And yes this stuff is awesome on your garden in small increments
  • great info! We were recently given ducks and it was starting to get to my back, cleaning that pool. thank you so much. blessings to you
  • I like the basket strainer idea - good thinking! We've been pondering how to set up our duck pond for the spring. I think the thing with the duck manure water and fertilization is that it is pretty "hot" - high in nitrogen - we raise chickens and it is hot too so I usually let it compost first with some wood chips or leaves or something like that. Maybe if it drained into a pile of wood mulch or something like that Anyhow, thanks for posting this. It gave me some ideas.
  • Brilliant idea! I think I have something to put on my hubbys 'to do' list. Thanks for sharing!

That's a really cool idea! Love simple solutions to tasks that we make unnecessarily hard on ourselves.
