EV Charging at Supermarket - Still cheaper than an ICE?

Published 2024-02-12
With rapid chargers now being installed at supermarkets could this be a solution for those considering an EV but are unable to charge at home?

This is our 3rd time of charging at Lidl but I have never got this 60 kW charger to give more than 40 kW. For sure a newer EV than the e-Niro with a higher charging speed may get better results.

At the end of the video I give costs, kWh, time spent charging and how many km added based on our average winter/summer efficiency of 14 kWh/100 km (4.4 miles/kWh). Then I compare that with a fossil fuel powered car rated at 5.6l/100 km (50 mpg).

Of course these results will vary depending on the price of charging where you live and the efficiency of your EV.

  • Thanks, I'm enjoying the niro . Planing ahead on things I need to do charging overnight on level one charging has worked for me. Presently I have 22,000 miles driven one the car.

Supermarkets and other stores or malls with large car parks are great places for chargers, they are very useful, if the charger power and reliability is good.
  • Which charging network do the French Lidls use? In the UK it is PodPoint at 65p per kWh. Asking for a friend who will be travelling down to Saintes/Angouleme soon. I think having rapid DC chargers at supermarkets make more sense than less than 10kW AC posts, because you're not always going to be in that shop for 2 hours. However having a DC rapid at an Ikea is problematic as that shopper who is charging will be immersed inside for a long time.
  • I appreciate your threads on the niro I have a 2022 model and i have no range anxiety whatsoever. I drive to work round trip 50 miles aday and have plenty left for running around town. Oh and by the way just using level one charging at home overnight

39kw on a 60kw charger, did you precondition the battery through the gps in the Niro? To get the highest rate of charge ,I think you need to be around 15 to 20%.

We're waiting to see if the Sainsbury EV hub roll-out in the UK gets underway quickly and whether it leads to a price war - we do rather need one here as are still (Tesla excepted) suffering from an old-fashioned ringing of prices. This was inevitable, when government subsidised installation of DC chargers, but did nothing about the rate that the little monkeys could charge for a charge.
