The India Story: Momentum of a Billion Aspirations | Davos 2024 | Smriti Irani |

Published 2024-01-23
Can India Seize Its Moment? India stands to benefit from ongoing efforts by Western economies to diversify supply chains and strengthen partnerships among democracies. As the country regains its position as the fastest-growing large economy, this could elevate it to join the US and China in a new era of "G3" powers. How can India overcome structural challenges and emerge as one of the world’s pre-eminent economies while sustaining its current growth?

It is because Modi is our PM we have these great ministers, several of them are technocrats, who are doing great, far-far better then the earlier ones on their seats in UPA time. This is why India is growing so fast in every sector because we have a very strong leader who bring in best minds and give them the leading positions in Cabinet.

India needs to reform its manufacturing. Land acquisition, red tape, and ecosystem development still remain a challenge.

I am excited for India and I sincerely believe it will have not one of the best but the best growth story in the world for the next few decades. In terms of areas of improvement, I humbly submit the following: 1. Overhaul of the judiciary - the judicial system is broken with millions of cases pending in the courts. 2. Eliminate corruption in the police force: The police cannot be relied on to assist the citizenry in even the simplest and most straightforward tasks in a police station without a bribe. Virtually every police person and police station is corrupt at some level. 3. Get serious about protecting the environment: With the rapid progress made in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors and the rapid increase in disposable incomes, there is an imminent and grave danger to our environment. If proper laws are not made and enforced, India will suffer greatly. The air we breathe will be polluted, our rivers and lakes will be polluted, there will mountains of plastic and other trash lining our roads and neighborhoods. I have seen a heart-breaking amount of plastic strewn next to highways and even inside wildlife national parks. I fear India and Indians will pay a very heavy price if we blindly pursue progress without conscience.
