She was born in Karachi on 3 April 1965, the first child of Muniza, a social worker, and businessman Basir Hassan. Brother Zoheb and sister Zahra were her younger siblings. The Hassan siblings later lived in England with their grandmother. They discovered pop and rock music in Manchester and were inspired by American pop band Jackson 5 and American instrumentalists The Carpenters. The ‘fusion artistes’ began writing music on the guitar, which blended the ‘rock’ of their ambiance and the Eastern sounds of their heritage.
Blast From The Past: Why Nazia Hassan’s is a tragic tale
They were introduced by superstar Zeenat Aman to Vinod Khanna and Feroz Khan at a party in London. When Khan heard the 14-year-old Nazia sing, he insisted she sing for Qurbani (1980). She, reluctant to miss school, recorded the club number, Aap jaisa koi, composed by London-based Indian composer Biddu Appaiah (Kung Fu Fighting fame), on a Sunday. At 15, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Playback. Next, Nazia and Zoheb sang for Biddu’s album Disco Deewane (1981). Selling 60 million copies across 14 countries, it became the best-selling Asian pop record of all time.
Blast From The Past: Why Nazia Hassan’s is a tragic tale
Apart from her voice that spelled freedom from borders and dogmas, her informal demeanor made Nazia a teen icon. Dungarees and jumpsuits, leather jackets and midis, braided tresses, and ponytails, Nazia was the poster girl of cool. Boom Boom, Young Tarang, Hotline… a series of fast-selling albums earned the siblings a comparison with the Beatles ‘minus the crazy haircut’… until one day Nazia quit it all…

Blast From The Past: Why Nazia Hassan’s is a tragic tale
Nazia, a graduate from Richmond American University in London, also held a London University Law (LLB) degree. In 1991, she joined the United Nations Security Council in New York and worked there for two years. She was then offered a scholarship in Columbia University’s Leadership Program. Sadly, she was unable to accept it given a health scare. Reportedly, Nazia underwent an operation in 1995 after she was diagnosed with stage one ovarian carcinoma. She recovered with treatment.

On March 30, 1995, Nazia married businessman Mirza Ishtiaq Baig in Karachi. Her son Arez was born on 7 April 1997. Towards the end of 1998, reports stated her left lung had ‘a solitary deposit’ of carcinoma. She reportedly said, “All of us have to die one day. But I felt it wasn’t my time yet… it sounds cliche… the outpouring of prayers saved me.” Another excerpt of the ZeeTV UK interview has her saying, “You can get worried about the future… about dying… but it’s important to be positive… I cherish every day… I have a little son… a two-year-old monster.”

Blast From The Past: Why Nazia Hassan’s is a tragic tale
The terminal disease advancing fast, Nazia was admitted to North London Hospice in London. She died of lung cancer on the morning of 13 August 2000. 35-year-old Nazia was buried at Hendon Cemetery in London. In a strange twist, 10 days before she passed away, Nazia reportedly divorced her husband, Mirza Ishtiaq Baig, something he has reportedly refuted. Brother Zoheb revealed in an interview, “She died an unhappy person, she died in pain.”

  • Massive proof that following ones religion and or being closed minded over being sensible is deadly.. I dont care what people would say in comment section, but thats my view..also m not just talking about one religion, its true among so many religions. People make up their own rules and follow it in the name of religion. She left her passion and everything because she was brought up to be like that, her parents werent good enough to make a wise choice in selecting a groom, cz beneath all their education they were closed minded people who were desperate to just get her married. This is a lesson for everyone, that u should never quit what u love, trust ur gut instinct always, use common sense more than caring for what people would think about your character/life . Such a beautiful soul gone way too soon. Such an evil, dishonest, dumb, criminal of a husband she got 😓😤 RIP beautiful soul Nazia!🌻🌺🌸💜✨✨🤍🤍🧡🧡

She was so beautiful, bright and intelligent and famous. How could her parents throw her in an arranged marriage with a guy who was much older than her and married twice???

It's amazing , how much Anushka Sharma resembles with her
  • First time I heard about her and it was very horrible story of her, such a multi-talented girl can't be found again; may her soul rest in peace
  • Fault of parents who marry their daughters off to random strangers without checking anything about their backgrounds
  • I think she was a very free and creative minded, innocent ,honest melodic singer...who wanted a very simple life to enjoy to her heart's content....but 😢 she failed for her unhappy marital life 😢
  • @Ash-nn3or
We grow up enjoying all her albums. She was a rock star and all those songs are back to my memory. Due to today’s media I could know what and how she disappeared. Very sad story.

Am an great fan of Nazia Hasan Ji... May her soul rest in peace in HEAVEN
  • I refuse to believe her family who were so well-educated, settled in London didn't know that this monster of husband was already married twice. How do you hide such a thing? They didn't care to find the right person for their daughter and became the reason she suffered.
  • @loveboy-yk8tu
