Jerry died because he was unattended in the trailer at 2:30 AM with 6 inches of snow on the ground, with a kerosene heater that tipped over. The family had no phone and no car, no heat to the trailers so while the trailers burned the babies standing barefoot in the snow got frostbite they had to be treated for. They weren't able to call for help and got lucky because a neighbor woke up and happened to look out and see the fire a half mile away and called the police. The nearest large town is 200 miles from them, so it had burned for over an hour and was all the way to the ground by the time the fire department arrived. Jerry was found lying in the kitchen near a washing machine.
