They've caused problems at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and taken over shopping centers in Fort Worth, now video from another Texas city is dealing with a grackle issue.

I was in Paco's a few months back when I walked out the restaurant, I was surprised with thousands of these birds in the trees lined along the sidewalk. They were very loud, and their droppings were everywhere...

Those scenes of the birds swirling in the sky were scenes of starlings. Starlings do a thing called a "murmuration" which is like a choreographed dance in the sky, and the thousands of starlings move as if guided by one brain. Grackles fly in a straight line. This link shows large murmurations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4f_1_r80RY

Texas grackles are crazy and have been for decades. So here is the story on them. In the late fall and spring they gather in huge numbers almost always in parking lots of malls and Wallmarts. This is their migration pattern. In the late fall they are on their way to warmer Mexico and spend inordinate amounts of time making pit stops like these in parking lots and going crazy. In the spring, they return back to Texas from Mexico. Thousands of these grackles descend on parking lots in Dallas, Houston and other Texas cities. It is creepy to somebody who hasn't experienced it before. Their serious look and yellow eyes make them look super crazy and mysterious. They are not intimidated by humans. They will land on your car rooftop looking at you while you are putting in your keys to unlock your car. They literally at times are one foot away from you when they land and could care less. It does look like a movie in these parking lots some nights. I have theories that some of these groups of grackles reach in the tens of thousands. Occasionally their migration will last into late late fall and you have this happening in December in Texas. They are looking for food and other things when in these parking lots.

I wonder if the grackles find the hordes of people annoying.
  • They showed up at my bird feeders this year for the first time. There's two dozen at most. They are aggressive and eat everything. They take the squirrels' peanuts and drop them in the bird baths and then come back later to fish them out. They eat meal worms, sun flower seeds, suet and mixed seed as well. They've chased away all the sparrows and finches. At least I don't have as many as that parking lot does.
