It used to be that in what was once smaller communities one’s integrity/character carried the clout. That’s who naturally rose as leaders. It wasn’t perfect, but better. You still had a few bad characters smart enough to fool the group but smaller communities are better able to self correct in those situations as well. The other problem with that is if someone of that character gets themselves falsely embedded, makes the proper connections, and then abuses that public trust. 😔
