Lando Norris is scared of Max Verstappen

Lando Norris has extended his contract with McLaren, and this has fans questioning if Lando Norris is SCARED of Max Verstappen. Some see this as a missed opportunity and a sign that Lando Norris fears the idea of racing alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull. Others made comparisons to Lewis Hamilton joining McLaren to race alongside Fernando Alonso in 2007, and have questioned if Lando lacks the same mentality. I think the suggestion that Lando Norris is "scared" makes no sense, and shows that F1 fans have the wrong idea about what drivers think. Enjoy.

It was interesting to listen to the Albon interview, where he said that Max doesn't have the team built around him, but he said Max is great at getting the maximum out of a car that has been setup at max sensitivity.

The way Norris argued his decision was a bit clumsy, not the decision itself. If he just had stated that his chances of becoming a world champion looked better to him at McLaren than being a number 2 at Red Bull, then there wouldn't have been a discussion.

McLaren wasn't Fernando's team OR Lewis' team... it was Ron's team back then.

Just a matter of time until Piastri outperforms Norris. I even predict, given the right time + car, Piastri could be the one that knocks Max of his throne eventually

Red Bull faces a huge challenge come 2026 when they're going to be supplying their own engines. Its very possible that switching to Red Bull now means only getting a year or two of the benefit of having the strongest car on the grid just before the team enters a period of struggle. Norris moving to Red Bull makes little sense, especially right now.

Oh the McLaren was totally built around Lewis. Who else would they have backed? Kimi was outta there in 2006, JPM had skedaddled and Lewis was their long-term prodigal son. Fernando came in as an insurance policy to DEFINITELY bag a title fight for 2007, McLaren never expected Lewis to be as good as he ultimately was.

Find it sad that so many people using this as something against Norris. First of all Max is having a huge amount of respect for Norris everybody could learn from that (see the interviews where max won and if he was surprised with Norris next to him, he's full of praises of Norris what an incredible driver he is and he doesn't say that often). But it's like you sad, Schumacher stayed with Ferrari when they where not on top of the game. Same with Verstappen he did stay with the 3rd team on the grid, stucked it out. More drivers should do such. So have respect for Verstappen but also Norris and Leclerc. Nothing wrong with the team you believe in you can make big. Just as you say, it will be hard to beat Verstappen in this team where he is obvious the golden boy. They invested in him, probably the reason why Newey is still around. It's a golden team they build. Now it's time for them to get all the achievements, but there is no driver at this moment can beat Max at Red Bull (they might build a faster car). But IF Norris would have beaten Verstappen at Red Bull (in his prime), that would also be an achievement what nobody would expect.

Ohh please, it's not about it being alnoso team, it was alonso's world, if lando moved to redbull, he will immediately be eligible for race wins, and with some balls( I think he doesn't have), eligible for a world championship , if merc get their sh# together, which they will at some point, then there is Ferrari, chances are lando will be looking at a couple more years without a win, how about he gets a car and team at the front end first, get a couple of wins, settle in then challenge max, if you can, rather than banking on maclaren mighttttt get it right which they haven't in a long time now

Michael building up Ferrari is nothing like what Max has done at RB or what Lando could achieve at McLaren. The drivers nowadays donā€™t do enough in terms of how a team grows compared to what used to be the case, especially with what Schumi did. That aside, Norris is yet to prove himself. He can get as many podiums as possible but if he canā€™t get a win, heā€™ll always be that one step away from being closer to the top. People who say that he hasnā€™t had a decent chance just need to look at how Max won his first ever race. Norrisā€™ best chance is always going to be at McLaren and I believe heā€™s made the right choice for himself

Schumacher didn't want Mika, JPM, Kimi, or Alonso as a teammate, Mansell quit Williams at the height of their dominance because he didn't want Prost as a teammate, the only World Champion who dared to have a fellow world champion as a teammate was Prost welcoming Senna in 88' and we all know how that ended in 89' and 90'

Honestly, would he be wrong to worry about his career and reputation? I seriously doubt Lando is much better than Gasly or Albon. In fact, I think Albon might actually be more talented (perhaps not mentally, though). Those guys took a serious hit driving against Max. It's like the dream or delusion they had has shattered upon entering the big team, being outclassed, and realizing that they can't match this guy. Gasly will never admit it, but Albon spoke very candidly about the affair. Not once did he say, 'the car and the team are built around Max.' In fact, he said it wasn't! He mentioned Max driving the car so sharp and twitchy, ramping it up over the season, making it uncomfortable for Alex to follow. he liked the car and the general setup just not to the extreme that verstappen was doing it.. basically saying he was getting outclassed at his own thing. gasly wanted something diff from the car for example.. but albon was basically on the same page and always felt the support from the team (its all a myth that verstappen performs better because hes catered to) A lot of talented drivers like Lando might be better off keeping the dream alive. Be the big fish in the team

Lando's biggest weakness is that he's too hard on himself. Once he gets some self-confidence he'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I think Red Bull would be a good short-term option for Norris, but if he joined them in 2025 he would only have one year before the rule changes. Perhaps one year wouldn't be enough time for Norris to fully adapt to Red Bull. Staying at McLaren on the other hand until the rule changes could be a better option long-term as they could hypothetically jump Red Bull in 2026. Maybe Lando Norris is scared of Max Verstappen, but he made a smart medium/long-term decision. If anything he should be more worried about McLaren's other driver lmao
  • @MTbone7
Lando wants to be the #1 driver thatā€™s it

I completely agree with you. On everything you said. I have thought it will be interesting to see if and how Norris handles Piastri beating him if it happens. I think Norris won't handle it well. I've seen other pundits and youtubers say Norris seems a bit more fragile to that kind of competition. For want of a better term I've thought along those lines as well. I've also seen youtubers say that Piastri isn't as intimidated by Max as Norris is as an opponent. I've thought that might be the case. But I haven't voiced it because I still feel that isn't exactly true and is a bit harsh. But then who wouldn't feel a bit intimidated by Max and Red Bull as opponents?

I do believe that Lando Lacks that killer mentality which you need to win. Monza 21 i think he shouldnā€™t have listen to Daniel and thought for himself. Iā€™ve heard a podcast with him saying that he doesnā€™t want to be selfish or anything like that but i do believe in Sport and specifically Individual sport you have to think for yourself and why you compete. I donā€™t like that heā€™s happy finishing second behind Max most of the time last year. It shows an acceptance of that Max is better than him. if i compare that to Schumacher/Senna/Hamilton/Alonso/Vettel/Verstappen or from his gen Russell and Piastri they all believe they are the best and want to win. I donā€™t know Lando personally so iā€™m not going to judge i met him once briefly he was good fella even if he looked miserable meeting his fans which to me seemed like he wasnā€™t in a good mood but i thank him for taking a picture with me.even if it was 1 minute with him.
