Deep Rock Galactic has been in the oven for a few years now, and with its 1.0 release I decided to take a look. I'm very glad I did - this is rock solid title.

  • Hey. Thanks a lot for the kind words ❤️ I’m one of the devs, the animator to be specific. And I have actually been a subscriber to your channel for years now. Great content, and great surprise to see my game here 🙂 Keep up the good work 👍
  • All this, and it's barely over 2 GB. That might be the most impressive part.

Honestly, you got it wrong with the enemy types. You say 2-3 enemy types. From the footage it looks like you probably played on the second easiest difficulty out of 5, which is easy enough that the enemy variance is limited. In the higher difficulties in addition to the basic grunts, swarmers (the tiny ones), the praetorians (the big ones) and others seen in the video, you also face these: - 2 extra variants of grunts (one does more damage, one is armored) - Wardens, which shield other units until killed - Biome specific Praetorians that do elemental damage - 2 types of ranged grunts, one spits acid that does damage, the other spits web which slows you and obscures vision - Exploders which charge you and suicide bomb you - The exploders big daddy, the Bulk Detonator, which has massive explosive attacks the size of most objective areas - Menaces, which do hit and run attacks with ranged attacks from afar - Sandworm-like Trawlers in sand biome maps - Flying enemies, which include: - Spawns, that just spit goo at you slowly - 2 variants of Bombers that throw blobs that stick to the ground and slow you down - Shockers, tiny amoeba type enemies which flock to you and start shocking you, along with larger breeders that spawn them - Q'Ronar, 2 variants of Droideka types of rolling enemies - Konar, currently a very hard almost boss-level enemy that constantly heals itself and spawns enemies around itself Around half of these appear in all missions, the rest are biome specific or just rarer. There's no way you can say that "you really fight the same 2 to 3 enemy types 80% of the time". In the higher difficulties the basic grunts and the like become cannon fodder you just deal with, but the real fight comes with tackling the special enemies before they become an issue. Like killing grabbers before they grab anyone, which isn't that hard since they have a distinct audio cue when they're coming in to attack. Also your issues with the weapons didn't mention the later game overclocks that you can attach to them, which make them work very differently and have some really satisfying effects to them. You didn't really mention the ability to use alternate weapons either, I wonder if you missed that content entirely?
  • SkillUp: "The combat isn't very engaging and I can't hear the enemies most of the time." Also SkillUp: "I play on some of the lowest difficulties and watch Rick and Morty on my second monitor."
  • @ImKibitz
Couple end game notes: - There are weapon mods that 100% change how weapons work (like turning the grenade launcher into a mini-nuke launcher) - The combat ramps up to 3000% when you're on the hardest difficulty and is WAY more fun then the lower difficulties - The endgame loop is really about collecting cosmetics As someone who's nearing 1000 hours in the game, this is a pretty solid review! Rock and Stone!

"... and in 2021, I'm okay with that." Yeah I wish 2020 could be over too.
  • @gobomania
"Combat ain't that good" Proceed to show almost exclusively high octane action shooting clips for the rest of the video

I still remember my first hazard four. It was in the sandblasted corridors, and the cave was just one big, deep hole. The drop pod during evac landed at the very top of it, and me as a driller, and my gunner friend, had to scale the top of it. We were both at the final jump to the evac pod, and I miss my jump. I fell to my death, while watching in horror as my friend is grabbed by a mactera, and dropped down the entire length of the cave. We didn’t escape.

"Only 30% of the time is combat." Hazard 5 would like to know your location
  • The best thing about this game HAS to be the devs. When the first introduced the (free, unlockable) skins for weapons, some people were able to glitch skins of one model onto another model. The community liked some of these combinations so much that the devs MADE it a feature. The devs in general are very nice and lovely people. Really glad I bought the game, and I bought the DLC just so I could support them. ROCK AND STONE!

Bosco doesn't just 'work surprisingly well', he is the most overpowered AI team mate/companion I've ever seen in any game up to this day. He is basically all the four classes combined into one tiny machine. He is able to shed light, shoot enemies, mine terrain and minerals, support to carry items, shoot explosive missiles. He is overpowered but also extremely well balanced at the same time. GSG really did a great job on fine tuning Bosco, people will rarely see something that is both overpowered and well balanced in other games, it's either one or the other. This isn't just one of the best co-op games ever made, it is THE BEST CO-OP GAME you can find. L4D, B4B, Gunfire Reborn, none of these can even hold a candle to DRG, not even close. Imagine dropping into a mission with three other dwarves, never met them, never spoken to them, and all four of you are completely in sync with no comms or voice chat, that experience is common in DRG, that's when you know that the devs are doing it right. No microtransactions, no pay to win elements, free season pass and everything can be unlocked just by playing the game, and the game is only under 4GB. The only things that can be purchased with real money are the exclusive DLC skins which are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay in any way. I normally don't buy DLCs from games unless they are worth it but GSG is an exception because they deserve my money. Simply spectacular, this is the one game that I will never ever uninstall from my PC. ROCK AND STONE!

New people coming to this review should know, the developers are still working hard on this game. It has only gotten better... So much better. There's more biomes, more mission types, a new primary weapon for each class (and new secondaries coming soon in 2022), overclocks that heavily modify how weapons work, more enemy types, and so much more! It's a cheap game to buy, but I will never in a million years doubt that I got my money's worth out of it already and I'm still getting more out of it to this day.

For ROCK and STONE ! As a veteran Miner I'm glad to see so many new Dwarfs hired by the company. Hoxxes is a dangerous Planet, and we lost quite a lot of Beards. So welcome, as long as you are not a pointy eared Leaf Lover

It's a really nice video but I want to point out some things : - The game was in early acces for only 2 years. I wanted to precise that because "for years" doesn't feel like it's making any justice about it when so many games are stuck in EA for way more than 4 or 5 years. - There's only one type of flying enemy that can pick you up and there's a counter to that : if you shoot them, they release you. Ofc, when you show it in the video, both of your mates are downed and unable to help you but there's definitely an other way to counter them than just this "one perk". - 30% combat, as many people said that before me, is mostly untrue. It really depends on the difficulty you're playing on. - Trust me, there are caves that are very similar. You might not have seen yet but it's a thing. Though, to be fair, the developpers are working hard to make each cave feels more unique. ^^ - There are around 20 different enemies, and I'm not including those who are too similar to each other in that list. And the devs are going to add even more. "you're really fighting the 2-3 same enemies" feels really inaccurate. - Regarding the "audio cues", again I think you're expecting the game to hold your hand (in fact, a few enemies warn you that they are about to attack very consistently). You are on a very dangerous planet, you ARE supposed to be careful, you ARE supposed to watch each other's back within your team (and it's even funnier when you complain about it when you are the gunner : the one who's dedicated to the protection of his team). - Actually the sound design is REALLY good in this game and the quality is high up there. Now, having said that, I must add : it's totally okay to not be fond of the combat system and to prefer the whole exploration/mining part but it really sounds like you needed the game to have flaws (and it has flaws obviously but not the one you picked, funnily enough), problem is that you turned your preferences into flaws when... well... they aren't. xD Anyway, Rock and Stone brother !
  • @AdrasAdraki
This indie dev realised what blizzard didnt when they repeased ow, that all we, the players wanted was a pve game with 4 Torbjörns.
  • @therealbahamut
Soooo...open ended gameplay, lots of variety in environments (though not so much in enemy types yet,) plenty of unlockables, a functional multiplayer element, a complete game AND no overbearing monetization? You mean, like, it's a flawed but fun game made by decent people for gamers? Sounds like it's almost worth buying just on principle alone.
  • @ewjiml
This is literally the best coop game I’ve ever played. Fallout 76, Anthem, none of it compares to this lovely burger. It has lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese, mayonnaise, and bacon,
