One of my biggest art purchase regrets from last year was the craftamo x Emma LeFabrve subscription. The brushes were nice, but not worth paying $50 a month for. I subscribed to another watercolor subscription box for a couple of years prior to that which cost half the price and included 4 tutorials each month. It made me ke so angry that I paid so much for cheap mungyo paint and only one tutorial each month. As much as I love Sarah's work and want to help support her art I couldnt justify the cost for this box, even though it looks like the paint is hugher quality than the cheap watercolor they used in the Emma boxes.

Thank you for the video. Very nice too hear from someone who had got a box. I have followed Sarah for some years and really like her channel and was tempted to but a box to try her brushes and a paint brand that is new to me. But some things made me hesitant. First it is he high cost, for someone in Britain it might be ok, but for me, in Sweden, the British pound is too expensive compared w my currency and that makes it far more expensive in real life than if i had lived in the UK. That of course is no fault of the box per se but something that has to be taken into consideration for international subscribers and for Sarah and Craftamo to consider as I suspect most of her audience is outside the UK, perhaps mainly in the US? Secondly I feel a bit suspicious when an artist in her own videos clearly uses other brands as her favourites ( D Smith, Schmincke , W&S) but never seem to use ShinHahn, the brand that comes in the boxes. Why? Does she not really like these colours and only uses them becuse Craftamo got a deal w Shin Hahn who saw a way to get their brand promoted by a popular gouache influencer? I have myself never painted w ShiHahn goache so I do no know how the qualiy compares to W&A, Schmicke etc that I am used to and like very much. But why a different brand of gouache in these boxes to those she seems to use on her own channel? She is using the brushes on her channel so those might be interesting to try, but for over 55£ a month w postage I am very hesitant. I would like it to be possible to buy just one or two brushes to try, not a whole set of brushes or one of these boxes, for that to be cost effective they would have to be enrmously superior brushes indeed! So I am torn, I might go ahead and buy one box just to satisfy my curiosity and to support an art influencer ( even though I am a bit torn about that too, for me an artist should earn an income selling art and teach art, not by selling ” my life as an artist” on the internet, but Sarah is very generous in her free videos with advice so I tell myself it counts as teaching and so she passes my ”artist test” w flying colours!) I am sure the tutorial is well thought out and good value, after all I like to watch her channel and I like her approach to painting and she seems a very nice lady too.
  • Thank you for this. I missed out the first time around and am just now subscribed and awaiting the first box. I appreciated that you worked out the cost of supplies, but wondered how you put a value on the tutorial each month? I’m not criticizing, just wondering. I’m now a subscriber to your channel and excited to see what you post. The painting that you showed from the box you opened that you did was lovely, you obviously have both talent and experience! I’m a beginner, so I’m nervous.

I also subscribe to Emma L.'s art box, and I find that Sarah's is far superior to hers. The tutorials alone are almost worth the price of the box itself. Plus, we know exactly what paint we are getting - 15 ml tubes of Shinhan. I have only continued Emma's box because after getting one of Sarah's monthly boxes, I decided that the Emma's wasn't worth the money (her tutorials really lack in comparison, and we have no idea what kind of paint we are using, plus there is no way to replace anything) and I told Craftamo to cancel my Emma L subscription. They countered with an offer that I felt was more in line with the value of the product so I decided to continue. I have 2 more months left. I suspect the paint is really an inexpensive white label brand because she has freebies in every box. Not so much with Sarah's box, but we do have piece of mind knowing exactly what we have in addition to the top notch tutorials. I hope you have continued to enjoy Sarah's product. I know I have!

Box 1 was good but a bit miffed they charged £11 per box shipping from china. So thats £43 per box . Box 2 was a let down.
  • I think this is a great box but I think £10 for postage is a bit much every month,
  • The first box was good value, but I felt like everyone else the postage was way too much. I have received four boxes now and I am going to cancel. The subject matter has become boring and way too much the same. Two tubes of paint and two brushes, do not justify the cost.

I think you way way undervalue the tutorials here.. Each months tutorial/digital content is about 1.5-2h long and very in depth and additionally you get scans, written descriptions and reference pictures. If you buy on-demand video workshops you often pay quite some (more) money for similar things. You know how much time it takes to produce video content. I mean oppinions differ and I'm totally fine with that. But to me that part is valued way too cheap in your calculation and I think all in all that box is worth way more. Sorry 😊
