Owning a Dalmatian?? | What you need to know!

Published 2019-10-10
Owning a Dalmatian is fun and exciting but not easy. I made this video to help anyone who really wants to own a Dalmatian get a clue on what it will be like and how your life may change or may not change. First off, Dalmatians have an exuberant amount of ENERGY. They need to be walked for 30 minutes twice a day or go on one long 45 minute run. Second, they need to eat a special diet because they make urinary crystals called Urate crystals. And lastly, Dalmatians have a genetic issue of deafness. This means before you get your Dalmatian make sure the breeder has tested their hearing to make sure they are not fully deaf or if they are unilaterally deaf. I hope this information helps you in deciding whether you still want a Dalmatian or not. In my experience with owning Blue and Violet, I feel they are just like owning a hyper Labrador retriever. Blue and Violet are both so sweet, loving and kind dogs and I would recommend getting a Dalmatian if you want one! ~ Dr. Lindsay Butzer

We had our Dalmatian, Buddy, for nearly 15 yrs! He was the best dog, ever, and we will always miss him. We got him as a puppy, and took loving care of him in his senior years. They have such deep love and loyalty to their humans, and our lives were made richer for having him as part of our family. Saying goodbye to him was especially heartbreaking because we knew nothing more could be done to keep his congestive heart failure under control. I'd promised him I'd never let him suffer, and the time came when we knew life was no longer comfortable for him. We surrounded him with love and, with the help of a compassionate vet, we eased him into sleep and released him from his failing body. We always kept HIS well being as our priority. It was a blessing to spend those years with him! <3

You forgot,"you need a REALLY" good vacuum cleaner!
  • My Dalmatian #5 was deaf. She was so smart that I had her home for 2 weeks before I realised she had a problem. (Fireworks on New Years Eve and my other 2 dallies were going crazy and she ignored the whole thing.) Truly, the extra work was worth it. She was a truly loved and treasured member of our family.

I love my Dalmatian, he is so smart.
  • I had a female Dalmatian back in the early 90's and she was a great family dog. I named her patches, because she had a black patch over her right eye. She followed me everywhere I went and never left my side. She was a good dog and I miss Patches a lot!

We have one sleeping over because her boss had to go for surgery and I found out that Dalmatians are extremely affectionate, I have never seen a dog miss her boss this bad. Kinda sad, but they'll be reunited soon enough.
  • i owned one when i was teenager....lol... beautiful dog and super smart...

Highest energy breed she knows? Well damn I guess she’s never seen a Border Collie then 😂😂
  • I have a dalmatian and I think she's smarter than most people I meet. She is, however, a bit on the stubborn side. If you tell her to do something and she doesn't want to, she won't do it. She's a beautiful, loyal and loving dog.

I've owned a bernese mountaindog, german sheppard, labrador, husky, rottweiler, golden retriever and a dalmatian. I loved them all, but my dalmatian was the one I had the most fun with. Like doctor lindsay said, they are full of energy so if you are the type of people who spends weekends outside doing exercise, this dog is for you! And they are also very affectionate and protective. Dalmatians are simply the best ❤️

Dr Lindsay, I'm so glad to see videos like this. People truly need to know about essential needs such as extreme exercise. Too many end up in animal control or Dal rescues. Great video.

my neighbor has around 5 dalmatians and everytime i walk home, only the baby dalmatians bark like crazy haha. but they are so well trained because when the gate is open, they don’t leave at all. they are so cute.
  • She is the prettiest Vet I have ever seen and I love her personality will never stop watching your video you are so beautiful Doc

They're pretty hard headed and clever. Also, you're spot on about the energy.

I had three at once. They were fantastic. I would take them on all day hikes and they loved it. Pepper was partially deaf but she learned hand signals. Smartest dog I have ever seen. I miss her.

Love this video, I have a dalmatian and she is everything you described. She's amazing loving dog with loads of energy. She's loves running and playing with other dogs. Before getting a dog people have to aware how much time you need to spend. My dalmatian has at least 1 hour walk in the the morning and evening, best is of the lead so she can run freely.
  • I have a four month old Dalmatian with my fiancé and it’s such a great time with him! We love him so much, so beautiful and he loves learning tricks!
