Inhabits eastern coastal NSW & Victoria. These strange birds make a cat mee-ow sound. This was shot this morning through our kitchen window.

Yesterday near Maleny Qld. i wound up wandering 20 mtrs into the bush , looking for a starving / injured kitten. after searching with no results , i asked a local if the noise was common to the area. thats when i found out about this bird. Had me fooled.
  • This is the first time I have ever seen or heard of a Catbird , amazing beautiful bird.

Heard my first fella the other day in a rainforest northern NSW. Freaky! I was 90% sure it was a bird, 9% a small mammal in distress & 1% abandoned baby Lol. Australia is full of incredible wildlife & wilderness.

Me and a couple of mates did a big trek through Lamington National Park and just as it's going dark I hear this bird for the first time in my life. Imagine a dark rain forest, totally quiet, then that sounds rips across the trees, I needed 5 new pairs of undies back at the carpark.

The novelty of their call wears off when you live near one.
  • My mum woke us up at 11pm so I could come identify a birdcall for her, I had to google “Australian bird that sounds like a cat” to figure what the heck was screaming in our front yard. At first we thought it was a dying fruitbat or smth.
  • This bird has been sitting around in my Pomona Queensland garden for a few days now. Beautiful colours.

He's an impressive singer...:) We have many gray catbirds around here, but they speak with a little different accent...Great capture - love this bird! Thank you. :)

The first time I heard them was on the Atherton Tableland and I too wondered what the hell it was...and that was in the daytime, being nearly dark must have given you quite a scare...lol We now have them visiting our house daily....

These birds come into our backyard (amongst many other birds). Big birds with big eyes.

@my35Xvision Thanks, Usually they only make a "ding" sound but lately it has been this not very melodious song, which starts about 6am lol.
  • @OzBirdZ
Yes, they certainly do sound like a cat in distress, thanks for comment
