Kurt Cobain claimed that Heart Shaped Box was inspired by a television report of children suffering from cancer. However, many believe it was really written about his shaky but passionate relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. The lyrics do tend towards this latter interpretation, since they seem to concern themselves with an unstable romance between two individuals. It's worth noting that the lyrics mention Pisces and Cancer, Cobain's and Love's respective astrological signs. Love, after their second meeting sent a small heart-shaped box, containing, among other things, a doll's head, to his hotel room. This is believed to have inspired the song's title. Cobain and Love both shared a love and fascination of dolls.

Tuning: Drop C#.

Equipment used: Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar, Tech 21 SansAmp Classic, Electro Harmonix Polychorus(solo) and Fender Mustang IV amp.

Lyrics:

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn back

Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Your advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of 'Your Highness', I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Your advice

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! I got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

If you ever play a Nirvana song, please do it with passion. That's what Kurt would have wanted you to do and that’s the right way to play his songs. It doesn’t matter if you don’t hit every chord or every note correct as long as you just put some soul and passion into it. Let that be the lesson of the day, haha.

whenever i play nirvana’s songs i feel so badass. i always play them so much more passionately that other songs.
  • Kurts one of the only reasons I've picked up a guitar after i stopped listening to rap, and this is now the first time I've actually realized the significance of today.(this is the first April 5th I've only been listening to nirvana since around late September) Rip Kurt
  • Ur so good bro, greetings from Uruguay Grunge is Not dead
  • THIS is accurate and passionate, that's the way Kurt would have liked his songs to be played.

  • He will always live in our hearts. Forever in debt for your priceless music. Happy Birthday and rest in Peace Kurt Donald Cobain.
  • I thought I was alone. Nice to see someone else is obsessed. Obsession is the only way to be truly passionate.

I've waited for this, my all time favorite song of Nirvana. All these melancholic and emotional thoughts and deeds put into a song, it says a lot about Kurt and his deep feelings he had. The sad little sensitive, unappreciative, Pisces. The relationship had a major impact on him and unfortunately it came to a severe ending. Kurt's humble and passionate personality has influenced us all in many different ways. What a journey it has been, and now we're here to honor Kurt and Nirvana.
  • I enjoy these guitar covers for a couple reasons. For one it's Nirvana who inspired me to actually pick up a guitar in the first place, and secondly you are playing all these songs with the same feeling and passion Kurt put behind it. Plus it doesn't hurt that unlike some people you are actually playing all of these songs correctly and pretty much like Kurt did. If you were like me growing up I studied all the movements, the little "tics" Kurt would do. Gone too soon and still missed terribly :(
  • This song was played EXACTLY how it should be played. This is how Kurt played. Angst, excitement, passion, grit. Perfect.
  • @Kyng_T
There is weight and feeling. Whether passion, anger, sorrow, loss. His notes sang true to himself.
  • Man previous generations don’t know HOW jealous I am that I never had the chance to hit nirvanas concerts. Literally one of my biggest dreams ... nice cover tho sir , salute !
  • So basically this channel is an accurate representation of an afternoon of guitar playing at my house lol.
  • I really love the way that you're playing that , you have some sick hand moves especially on the last chorus !
  • I've been following your stuff for a long long time and I just realized how much indentified I feel with what you do. You love Nirvana so much that you never get tired of playing their songs, even though they have a relatively small discography and the songs are sort of repetitive. You play them over and over and always seem to be having the time of your life, because it's your fav band and it's always gonna be. I wish I could find more people like you and me in real life, who could spend days and days just playing Nirvana songs just to have fun and mess around... But as far as I've seen, people tend to get tired of playing Nirvana too early due to the "overrated" or the "too easy" cliche. Damn there's nothing funnier than losing your shit playing a Nirvana song. Keep it up man!
  • If Kurt never meet Courtney Love. I bet he would still be alive today.
  • Man, this song always remembers me InFAMOUS: Second Son, what a Great Game and what a awesome band
  • You'd make the coolest dad ever, awesome cover man!
