In this jazz piano lesson we explore the beautiful 1436251 jazz piano chord progression in the key of Eb Major. If you are looking for a rich and lush jazz chord progression to use as an introduction to your jazz standards, this is the chord progression you have been waiting for.

We start by building the diatonic 7th chords in the key of Eb to understand the basic chords that we are working with. We then start to change the chord qualities to dominant 7th chords which allows us to access more interesting chord extensions and chord alterations. If you are unsure how to play jazz chords and connect the chords in the progression smoothly, you will learn the basics in this jazz piano tutorial.

2 essential chord progressions in jazz music are the 251 progression and the 36251 progression, both of which are covered in this lesson. These progressions are used in jazz, blues, funk gospel, and many other styles of improvised music.

This progression is the perfect introduction for any tune that starts on the Imaj7 chord. A nice touch is to run up the upper structure triad on the final V7 chord which then leads smoothly and convincingly into the start of the tune. We demonstrate using this chord progression to create an introduction for the famous tunes "Misty" and "Over The Rainbow".

I came across the concept of "Extended Dominants" while learning "The Bygone Days" by Joe Hisaishi from the movie Porco Rosso, which sets up the falling in 5ths pattern on the vii chord in Eb Lydian. It's so easy to use once you get that IV-vii-iii-vi-ii-V-I base template in your head, but really powerful, it almost feels like a cheat 😂
