In these clips you can see, hear and feel the atmosphere. There is clearly plenty left to do such as add more dynamic and static destruction to the environment, place abandoned vehicles, improve the AI, and expand on the game's core mechanics.

War of The Worlds is an indie game I've been developing for a little under a year based off the 2005 Steven Spielberg motion picture. It's a hardcore horror open world survival game which throws the player into the middle of the extermination of mankind with the sole purpose of surviving long enough to find a way to bring down the alien machines. Loot buildings, fight off hostile survivors, stay hidden from the machines, and stay alive. Explore the landscape with a wide variety of different environments and buildings with different resources to scavenge. How long will you survive?

When you’re chilling at home and the words “days survived” appears in the corner of your vision

Walking around while the tripods search for you is actually incredible, the fear is palpable!!

As someone who watched this as a kid and was genuinely terrified of these things this game instills a primal fear in me that makes this game transcend to the real world

Dude... The way they search around is so crazy realistic, and that part at 4:50 when it lowered down and almost spots you... Chills, man.

dude this is gonna be so good , imagine if it was 50 survivors and 3 tripods on a big map , all real players no npc , a bit like dead by daylight but war of the worlds

A near detail I noticed. The tripod design has an unintended feature where when it rounds a corner, the side lights appear first. This both gives the player a chance to notice and avoid the Tripod, but also has the effect of scaring the crap out of the player.
  • The design of the tripods of War of the Worlds(2005) was severely underrated. Those designs were phenomenal. From afar, it looks like an organic lifeform, perhaps a mixture of a crustacean like head with three squid like tentacles but up close, you'll see that it's actually a machine made of metal. It stares at you with its three haunting eyes. It screams with a loud horn, calling others of its kind to join and the gears moan as it walks nearer and you just hope that the moans fade away cause it's the only way for you to know that the tripod is leaving. Otherwise it's tentacles will search all of the crevices until it finally sees you and then snatches you up.

You guys are turning nightmares I've had since the movie came out directly into a video game. You have NO idea how many nightmares I've had throughout my life that you've re-created nearly perfectly even with this Alpha build here. I genuinely want this to release and allow me to be able to buy it because I want to make a video on something like this.

This is really impressive. It's clear you have a pretty solid understanding of how the tripods are supposed to move. I can tell you're working really hard to get them right so I would like to offer some input as a longtime fan. My only nitpick is in the film, the beam emitters don't really move much when they're firing, so the way they whobble a bit in that first sequence is a little out of character. The way they attack in the films makes it look like it isn't even an effort for them. I believe in the final movie model, the beam arms themselves are a bit shorter too. I really love how you've given them the ability to retract/extend their tentacles though. It's also important to remember that the head almost "glides" through the air when they move because of how smooth their leg movement is. It might wave slightly from side to side, but not up and down unless they're exerting effort to climb an incline. I'm hoping you will be able to add more behaviors for the tripods, such as their soil uprooting and blood spraying (hopefully you can integrate sounds from when they're seen spraying in the film). One of the things that makes Spielberg tripods so frightening is the way they can interact with their environment down to a really granular level, so capturing that in the game will be really important. You don't want to feel safe because you're small and might go unnoticed; they're incredibly alert and will search for you. I would love to see hunting behavior such as probes, moving objects around, flipping cars, digging through building ruins, etc. They really need to come off as intelligent, almost alive.

Though, despite it being a game, this actually made my day and brought me out of a sad moment. Who would have known my childhood nightmares brings me tears of joy.

The biggest thing I hope to see is this: When those things spot you, they need to turn on a huge spotlight that follows you and makes it hard to see the robot. If your in a building, they can use it to slowly scan the interior. That would be amazing for atmosphere, make it feel like they’re hunting you down.

If you, the dev, release it as an early access and don't give up on improving and updating it, players will be right behind you. Just look at what Project Zomboid used to be and what it is now. What you have and did here is great and has great potential. Also, I imagine the moment it gets a bit more popularity, some corporate lawyers will be sending you threatening letters due to copyright bs. Make sure you're prepared to rename the game or use alternative models/textures/sound design if the worst happens. Best of luck.
  • This needs to be multiplayer. I can't imagine playing this single player. It would be even more intense with a friend.

The sound design really adds to the tension. The terror of trying to stealthily walk or run or hide from them while hearing one or more stomping around is unreal, lol. I'm so stoked for this.
  • This is incredibly creepy and cool. Got chills when that Tripod seemingly crouched down to have a extra look XD
  • @mohanicus
that sound of the tripod walking in the distance is terrifying at 1:43...really really hope this hits next gen consoles when it's completely finished.
  • @Luna_LU6546
3:10 the A-10 gun runs really add to the terror, just the shear BRRRRRRRT in the night alone terrifies me
  • @darkstar-28
OMG i noticed just now that at the beginning of the clip, when the people are vaporized, you can actually see their clothes flying O.O absolute cool detail!
