It is an ancient monument revered by different ideologies for centuries.
Hagia Sofia in Turkey - one of the world's most contested buildings - is creating controversy once again.
It was the largest Christian cathedral in the Eastern Roman Empire for a thousand years.
Now, one of the busiest tourist attractions in Istanbul is a museum.
But not for much longer, if Turkey's government gets the go ahead to convert it back into a mosque as it was during the Ottoman Empire.
The proposal's opposed by some secular groups as well as the head of the Eastern orthodox church, the Greek government and the U.S.
Turkey's highest consultative body met on Thursday and say it'll announce its ruling within fifteen days.
But why now?
What purpose would it serve?
And how political is the decision?

  • What happened to qurtuba mosq in spain? They using as a chirch and no one asking them to change to museum. And latest news: Ayasofya (hagia sophia) will be mosq again.
  • Spain converted all mosques in Cordoba into churches. Hagia Sofia in Turkey was a mosque for 700 years.
  • What a terrible host. Let the guest finish his comments. Absolutely appalling journalism
  • why does not orthodox priest say anything about the mosques that converted animal places in Greece? there have been many churches in Istanbul...there is not even one mosque in ATHEN/GREECE.. someone should remember the Lausanne treatment and religion freedom for GREECE
  • Same argument should apply to palestinian too. Give them back their land. Will west do it?
  • Stop interrupting the speakers after asking questions. Disappointing...an anchor from Alajazeera becoming like CNN. It looks like she becomes frustrated when the speakers expess not the way she wants/wishes or was framed!
  • "hagia Sophia" in greek means the sacred wisdom. why should medieval emperors of the east devote their religious emblem to a rare saint? (the mother of Christ - Maria, would be the obvious choice). does this naming have a deeper significance ? Religion, of all types, mainly serves as reinforcement of power. To a lesser but significant extend, in the long term, it also serves as the guardian of sacred values of humanity. (Umberto Eco analyses that). Anything that brings about the "clash of civilisations" is a wrong move. Independent of the religion.
  • The Westerners are silent when Israel annexes Palestine.
  • Lausanne is not a fair treaty. Turkey should take back the posphorus and impose tax.
  • This ia Turkey's rights. If you see this as a worrying issue then you should focus on Palestine. Another thing, interupting people while talking is just rude.
  • @fmsajib
This lady interrupts too much, why Al Jazeera is keeping her?
  • Recently one of the biggest mosque in Athens in Greece was closed. Why didn;t Orthodox Patriarch, Bartholomew not oppose it? Is it double standards?
  • This host is interrupted the first guy so many times and she didn't interrupt the rest 2nd and 3rd guy. Come on be fair.
  • Alhamdulillah... Hagia Shopia/ Aya Sofya Mosque. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
  • @Acninety
Turkey changed it into a Museum, they have thr right to change it back to the original Mosque. Nobody has a say in Turkeys internal matters. Not the West or Unesco.
  • Please do not interrupt speakers, it's frustrating for them and for listeners/viewers
  • What about masjid in Spain? Hipocracy is there evedent in chirstian world
