The only machine that could ever beat Gordon Murray's F1. A monster so destructive it left entire championships shattered in its wake. Powered by a beating heart that would propel Pagani to the stratosphere, The CLK GTR was one of the last great supercars that opened the gates to the era of the hypercar.

This is THE SQUIDD, a channel devoted to telling boring stories BOLDLY. Automotive icons, car company calamities, supercar legends and underdog heroes. All told through the lens of The Squidd, automotive content creator famous for being a dude with bad hair.

For organization's sake lets just file all complaints about my mispronunciations of Straßenversion here. ^__^
  • Huge respects, its hard being the first race car that invented flight
  • @technoghost68
"Ferocious monsters. Tamed and hidden Never tasting the blood they were meant to feast of." That line goes so hard and really makes me feel bad for the super cars being in a museum instead of the racetrack
  • @jehscee
My most familiar memory of the CLK was using it in need for speed hot pursuit 2 (2002), there was a track that had a hill that you could launch this thing off and send it flying. Years later when I saw that it actually did that in real life I couldn't believe it lmao.
  • The nineties were the absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering. Miss it so much it almost brings a tear to my eye
  • @MrReese
The drivers walking away from those insane incidents with only minor injuries all three times really says a lot. Mercedes staying true to their values even in racing.
  • @fordcent
The CLK GTR is special to me, my grandmother owned a CLK 500 and when she passed I bought it back. Without the GTR I wouldn’t have the car I own today. Thank you for this video
  • "ferocious monsters tamed and hidden, never tasting the blood they were meant to feast upon." that line went so hard it struck my heart.
  • @Skreamies
It's still quite incredible they allowed the CLR to keep racing after the first flip, health and safety was different back then and that's not even that long ago. Incredible cars.
  • @lefata
It's amazing how this car took flight 3 different times at around 200mph and the driver only came out with a few scratches.
  • @kinger41
Ahhh, the car that killed off an entire class! Seriously tho, I'm fascinated by the late 90s GT1 era of the FIA GT Championship and I want more people to learn about the series overall.

The Porsche GT1 also did a back flip in Road Atlanta, the main problem with the GT1 class was it didn't have the same front overhang restrictions as the prototypes. Mercedes and Porsche exploited that to extend the splitter and create more downforce, but that allowed massive front lift if the nose lifted too high at speed.
  • Maaann .. that line "never tasting the blood they were meant to feast upon" it really, literally made me cry. Honestly, for a racing legend like this one, that fate is worse than death.
  • @Gois83
I remember the 1999 lift-off so vividly... I was shell shocked to watch the CLR filting off (for the 3rd time in the same weekend) and honestly feared for Dumbreck's life. I was also destrought for the fact that my fellow countryman Pedro Lamy was forced to give up on the real prospect of winning at Le Mans. He'd have the opportunity again at Peugeot but he really was never on the leading car.
  • Thank you Mercedes for contributing in the creation of 3 of the coolest race cars ever build. 911 GT1, F1 GTR LT and obviously the CLK GTR
  • @Astrophysix1
A beast, built for the track, bred to dominate the competition. only to be caged away because the one thing she was built for was brought down because she was so good at it. nobody could beat her. such a sorrowful ending for something so great. terrific video squid!
  • @shadxwslash44
The CLK GTR might be one of the most beautiful examples of a clash of two worlds. Where the quad headlights of luxury meet a screaming V12.
  • How does this channel only have 140k subs? These are masterful videos. The Squidd deserves respect!! Keep up the amazing work 👏

Man, never seen any documentary on car history so good before. The work you're doing is awesome dude. I would definitely love to see a Hudson Hornet documentary or a Ford vs Ferrari, or even a Group C documentary (you know with the Porsche 956, Jaguar XJR-9 and Sauber C9), and a Group B rally one. Sorry if it sounds like a lot, i Just hope to live enough to see it
