I often get questions about shoemaking kits, so I figured it was time to answer them properly! @AbbyCox and I are taking on sandals from The Shoe Camaraderie (and hopefully not setting the house on fire). As a historical shoemaker, I don't have a lot of experience with modern techniques, but the concepts are familiar. But, as many of these kits are aimed at the absolute beginner, I've brought Abby along to test things out as well!

Kits from theshoecamaraderie.com/
Abby made Astrid, I made Ines. As noted, they are going on a one year break and are having a sale which was extended to August 7th to deal with sudden demand, but may not have enough available for everyone (there are other options below).

Shoemaking kits (or sandal making kits) can be a great way to start out learning this new skill or to just do a fun adult craft! Some are sold as complete bundles with instructions, supplies, and tools. Others will sometimes split these parts up, so be sure you're grabbing everything you need (and nothing that you don't). I was honestly surprised at how easy it was to tailor our supply needs when purchasing, as I already have a fairly full kit of shoemaking tools.

I'm here to officially begin the petition for Nicole to release the pure chaos version of this video. 😂😎😉

“I’m dragging Abby in because she owes me one.” 🤣 But this was neat!

This video taught me two things: 1: The general idea of how to make a sandal. 2: Never give Abby anything that can create fire.
  • I am completely enamored with Abby's Edna Mode glasses. Also, Abby: I have fire! Nicole: I have a concern.

Re: Abby worrying about waste, I'd love a video on what you do with leather scraps. Buttons? Pocket trim for tweedy jackets? Mysterious super-technical tailoring tricks? T̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶e̶o̶p̶l̶e̶ ̶ at least one person wants to know.
  • I made sandals a million years ago (when I was in high school) with the help of my dad. I wanted sandals from Allan Block ( a Greenwich Village sandalmaker), but his prices were out of the range of my allowance. My dad said, as he often did, "We could make those." We bought heavy leather for the soles, thinner leather for the straps and insoles, brass buckles, leather dye, and a tool called the Awl for All from Tandy. For the pattern, I traced a pair of flat shoes that fit me. I drew a picture of what I wanted. Measured the strap lengths using ribbon around my feet. Cut the thin leather with an XActo knife. Can't remember what I used to cut the heavy leather. I think we dyed the edges of the straps before assembling and also sewed on the buckles. We sandwiched the straps between the insoles and the soles. Probably glued everything in place with rubber cement. Used an awl to punch holes in the sole and insole, then sewed them together with the Awl for All. When finished, we dyed the cut edges of the soles. After that, we made a few more pairs for my sister and cousin.

Abby's reaction to metric is how I feel when things are given to me in imperial

There was the thunder boom and Nicole looked like she couldn’t decide if she would finish the shoe or go watch the storm (or maybe play in the rain).
  • I would be really interested in a follow up video after they have been worn for a bit to assess the wear and durability.

29:25 - Abby tapping her sandals CLEARLY waiting for Nicole to notice, and being sad when she had to admit defeat - chefs kiss
  • Love the interaction between you two!! And glad that the house did not burn down. Also, side note, the vendor is closed until August 7th for orders.

Nicole's calm and collected paired with Abby's chaos is a delight to watch.
  • "I'm dragging Abby Cox in because she owes me." How you know its gonna be a good video. Its Abby, what could go wrong? Lol. Now I'm curious as to what Morgan Donner has in the works for her after trying to dye her hair black.
  • This needs to be a series. We need more of Abby’s chaotic energy
  • @aleciab83
I think Abby still owes you one. She had fun making these shoes….I don’t think you had as much fun standing in the desert sun for her experiment. So if this was supposed to e the return favor, it’s not equal yet.

The "OH oh we're committing" from Abby, I feel it deep in my soul.
  • @mouseluva
This video made me incredibly nostalgic for being 8 years old and going over to my best friend's house and doing crafts like making BOYS KEEP OUT signs for our bedroom doors adorned with all the stickers from our girly magazines~ Same vibe, ya know?

The gifted kid in class comment got me, too. Oof lol
  • @kohakuaiko
"you're being the gifted kid in class" I felt that.
