Last year we had an idea for an EPIC DIY Halloween prop….a gateway to the underworld! We spent all year thinking of how to make this insanely awesome halloween prop and we finally did it! The Dark Portal is a classic element from the Warcraft universe and we used that as part of our inspiration for this halloween prop. There are also some other video game elements in this build…the runic carvings aren't from Warcraft, but another epic game that we love. Can you figure out what they say? 💀

How does the Dark Portal work?
It's built entirely from XPS foam and paint, with LEDs on the inside to make the runes glow. We used a semi-transparent material on the back and then did a rear projection of a hellish VFX scene, etc. to create the interior of the portal. During the day, the fabric is taken down and then at night we project the hellscape.

We've made a lot of awesome DIY Halloween Props but this one is on another level, it's absolutely EPIC. It's a great addition to our Halloween Yard Haunt, and we're SUPER excited for the kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood to check it out! There's also the added benefit of being able to travel to other dimensions and worlds from our front yard. That's pretty good too.

A cool alternative would be to incorporate a fog curtain so you can actually walk through the portal.
  • I bet your neighborhood waits in anticipation to see how you decorate for Halloween. This portal is mind-blowing!

I'm a light technician, I do concert shows. One free tip for you.... Use Kitchen Wax Paper as a diffuser, it can hold some heat without creating a fire hazard. Also, use Polyisocyanurate Foam Board Insulation, you can get it in Lowe's with one side with a aluminum layer, that will hold heat and will help for reflection or if you use pink foam, glue a aluminum foil layer inside.

I realize this video is a couple of years old so this might have been mentioned. I used to build very elaborate haunted houses and projections were common. A give away to that effect is you can see the beam from the projector, especially if mist or fog is used. I solved this problem by shooting the projector through neutral density filters for video or stage lights. Window tinting will work too. Some times we had to adjust the brightness on the projector to balance the effect with the filters, but it worked great. People would see the image but could not see the source. This portal is awesome. You guys did a excellent job with it.

I am a simple person. I saw the runes of my kind and a portal. I clicked. This is really really cool!
  • @joemckinney3514
Looks like draconian runes from skyrim, love this lol takes Halloween to the next level
  • @duallity2403
I used to do a haunted house at my small bi-level home and the neighborhood loved it. Got out of it because of time constraints and the amount of money I was dumping into it. Haven't done it in about 6 years and still get asked about it every halloween. You guys are motivating me to start it up again! Hope my wife doesn't leave me :)
  • @Sjsharkie777
My wife and I have made at least 5 of your Halloween projects this year! We love your videos! In the words of Skyrim , you two are truly WICKED!
  • @Jestunes
This is so awesome! I worked as a propmaker in Hollywood for many years doing countless movies, TV shows and commercials and now retired. I just wish my wife would join me in making a project like this. Thanks for sharing...
  • I love this community of crafty people sharing tips on how to improve the techniques!! The toothpick idea is genius, so simple!
  • Green screen cover separate panels maybe out of cardbooard perhaps refrigerator boxes inside and put several together so you can walk thru them so you go thru them. Add the video then of the walk thru. Still be able to post the effect. Add a wave warp as your hand disappears as in stargate. Then whole body disappears thru. Then a wide shot of portal with an edit as your right leg is shown only going thru. Love the portal. Looks so real.
  • @IndyEGN
Just built and finished painting my portal yesterday, reassembled it n was blew away by how good it looks! Thank for this amazing tutorial. My LEDs go in TODAY!!!
  • the gateway is iconic from World of Warcraft same with the runes first released during Burning Crusade
  • Not enough time for tomorrow, but next year, the neighborhood will never be the same. Truly awesome.
  • Looks like the portal to outlands from World of Warcraft. Pure epic!
  • @zephdahoneybee
Remember those people who have really good Christmas light shows? Better believe Their house on Halloween looks phenomenal.
  • @SkippyTheLost
Well that’s the language of the dragons of Tamriel if ever I’ve seen it. A nonsense word by translation, but pronounced ‘WiiiKED’.
  • @kylerunyan5950
That is probably the most AWESOME Halloween self made project I have EVER seen!
  • @913mando
FYI, instead of carving in the foam for cracks and mortar joints it’s easier if you use a soldering iron. Cleaner too. I’m a theater guy...I do it a lot! PS - love your stuff
  • @breadbutt
if you add some laser pointers reflected into a flat plane with a spinning mirror (like in a laser level) and a smoke machine, you can create what would look like an actual glowing portal inside.
