WGN’s Medical Watch team was granted unprecedented access to the efforts on the healthcare frontline. It was something that wasn’t possible in the early months of the pandemic. It was a chance to see up close the care provided in the COVID-19 intensive care unit.

My dad was intubated back in June. As the family, it was the worst thing we could possibly imagine. He pulled though, thank god. He’s doing wonderful now. I, my dad, and my entire family is beyond grateful for all the doctors, nurses, and cnas that have been working tirelessly to care for these terribly sick patients. ❤️❤️❤️

60% of patients who go on a ventilator won't make it--that is very sobering.
  • My dad had gotten COVID-19 in April 2020. He was in a induce coma for 15 days when he passed away April 21 2020. He rapidly got pneumonia. We couldn’t say bye to him or be by his side. COVID-19 was so new. I feel so guilty not saying bye. But I talk to my dad every single day of my life. We were very close family. He will always be remembered and missed 😢❤️

  • March 10th 2021 this was my exact experience. I was in a induced coma for a month. I was the only one to make it out of ICU from what I was told. I want to thank Winthrop Hospital doctors and nurses for saving my life. I was dying and they saved me. I don’t ever want to go through this again ever in my life. So grateful to God for sparing me. Doctors and nurses should be respected for there hard work because they put there life on the line as well. Thank you 🙏🏽

***Update to my original post. He is back to volunteering, cutting grass for 30 minutes, and doing his office work. Each day strength is improving. We are thankful he made it home and an answer to prayer. Our family is praying for all families that are dealing with Covid and healing for them as well. Those who have lost loved ones I pray for peace for the families. I thank each health care worker for their tireless efforts.
  • My husband is in ICU and is on day 9 of the ventilator. He is 74. The nurses and doctors are doing everything they can to get him through this. I am so thankful for them. COVID is real folks. I don’t understand why people think otherwise.
  • Having been put in an induced coma I've had that IV in my jugular, two weeks later I had lost so much muscle mass I had to learn to walk again! Hope everyone makes a speedy recovery!
  • Being a nurse myself.. I must say these ICU nurses are amazing ...

They have been working under extreme stress for a whole year and they are risking their own health daily. Many of us may just call it a day but the health care professionals n hospital staff soldiered on and we have to salute all of them. They are very brave and sacrifice a lot. Thank you so much even though many are unable to make it. They have received care from you. And their families will be grateful for all that you have done.

Bless the staff and the patients. I couldn’t imagine lying on my death bed alone, no family beside me. 💔💔 😭
  • I was on the ventilator back in August 2021. 10 days of not moving made for a difficult recovery. But I can say that I am nearly back to normal today. I have much to be thankful for, starting with the ICU staff. God bless them.
  • @esmiel1833
Lord, thank you for these medical staff who are helping with the patients. Lord, keep them safe, so they can continue to help. God's blessings on all these men and women who are putting out effort to help.
  • THANK YOU TO ALL THE WONDERFUL DOCTORS AND NURSES THAT SAVED MY LIFE WHEN I GOT COVID.
  • @goodmeasure777
Rest in power, to Dr. Susan Moore. What a shame you couldn't get treatment.
