Make sure you use 1.5mm cable as Daniel did. (not 1.25). To periodically check the extension, use it for an hour and feel the plugtop and socket for excessive heat.

Lifesaver. Thank you kindly for sharing the knowledge. :D
-
Great video thank you . Was thinking building one myself but found a company called toughleads. Their cost for the same 5m set up is £27. So for an extra 5 it doesn’t seem like the effort to build yourself is worth it , unless you want a custom length

Great tutorial

Thanks for this. Managed to create the same thing from B&Q for just under £30, whereas the EV cable would have cost £160!
-
You’ve made a good job of the extension lead, however, the manufacturer’s of granny chargers are so concerned about the plug/ socket overheating that they put a temperature sensor in the plug that switches off the charger if overheating occurs. I believe the overheating would occur in the socket rather than the plug. Beefed up sockets are available as standard ones are not continuously rated.

How safe is that 3 pin plug when plugged in and what breaks should you use

Thanks exactly what I need to build and had been looking at the same sort of solution so good to see it works. Is there any issues with using the socket box flat vs the wall mounted position with regards to its IP rating? Will probably look to make mine. A bit longer as I’m in a terrace house with on street parking. The two additional steps I need to figure out is how to run the cable outside in the winter as I can’t put an outdoor socket on the house. Plus I’m going to need to get a trip hazard cover for the pavement that will stand up to any complaints.

Good video,-I used Medlock too, anything over £10 is delivery free!
-
Fantastic video mate. Just saved me about £70 quid thx

This does not conform to bs7671 charging points must be wall mounted extension leads are not allowed. Also outside 13amp socket must be ev type for continuous load an example is Hager wxpss81ev
-
Great idea! I’m thinking of doing this but in the cable shows 4 wires but your plug only has 3. What did you do with the 4th cable please?
-
Very useful video. Just one question: the wet bag, daft one I know, is it for covering the socket, only I see that the socket is waterproof. Thanks.
-
You said you can make the cable any length you want...voltage drop amperage drop? Over what maximum length can this cable be before the amps drop below your required 10 amps. Next size up cable would allow what length? Sóme people may need something longer than 10m.

In iraq we used 2,5×3mm .it is the best
-
Iv already got a wall socket like this outside can i simply plug in 3pin 8 metre granny charger into 60kwh megabe etech without risk of fried electrics ? Having a nightnare with ohme attenpting to get a proper car charger
-
Sorry for the dumb question. What is the dry bag for? For storage or use when charging??? Cheers for the vid ordered the parts as getting EV next week and in the process of buying a new house so need a granny for the interim.

How can you plug an ev directly into mains?
-
I thought you main plugs got fried if you do this?
-
Can I run a 40 metre cable with this method?
