40 years later, Ru Wen is still unable to connect the fragmented memories of her childhood. Survival meant burying her curiosity about why she’d been abandoned by her birth family -- a curiosity that grew into a silent longing over time.

For most of Ru Wen’s life, masking her pain worked...until Tiffany, her youngest daughter, started asking questions. Asking difficult questions goes against the rules of traditional Asian families, but to Tiffany, it was the voice her mother was missing. Armed with a pocket translator and a couple of Chinese names scribbled on a napkin, Tiffany travels to Ru Wen’s birthplace of Taipei to search for answers.

What she discovers there begins to reverberate across her relationships with the women who have come before her.

What started out as a journey to piece together Ru Wen’s past soon cascades into Tiffany’s own yearning to understand her mother.

‘Sing Me a Lullaby’ unravels the complex tensions between love and sacrifice, captured over 14 years and across two continents. Told through the intertwined journeys of daughters and their mothers, this is a story about recovering familial history, healing inherited pain, and understanding that love comes in many forms.

Something about CBC documentaries. They're always so honest ... so raw. Yeah. Life is so very sad sometimes, ain't it? ... And then you die :( (John's wife, ~ Sherriiii) 🌷🌿

My life has not been easy, so I understand... Sometimes you just don't want to know the answers in case it's more painful than the trauma you have already suffered. I love how it's the kids who have the love and courage to seek the truth... which would never have happened if the parent in pain didn't instil those beautiful values through the suffering and the heartbreak... Thank you for your beautiful story.

I love the how this story was thread together. It is so heart wrenching and beautiful and powerful. I write this after just ugly crying. My mom suffered a stroke in 2013 and I know how devastating it can be. I’m SO glad they got to meet and SO glad she got answers even if they were the hardest circumstances to hear. Thank you for sharing this with the world. ❤️

Beautiful, beautiful !!! Heart wrenching and healing. Thank you for sharing your journey.
  • I thought that she might discover that her Mom was a victim of the Cultural Revolution which was a force to be to feared in the Sixties as Jan Wong would attest to. Many intellectuals and dissidents were sent to re-education camps during this time period. But, to find out that the Dad had sold his own children to pay off gambling debts is truly horrendous, like something out of medieval times. We tend to be so critical of China for so many things nowadays, not really understanding the depth of breadth of their problems. How would many of us fare in a society with a billion people? The way women and children are often treated in this harsh and complicated culture is really tragic. These people are so courageous to come forward and tell their story.

Great job Tiffany. What a tear jerker journey. I wish someday I can take back my mother-in-law to her ancestral village in guangdong province. (She currently live best in Ho Chi Minh City).
