Do fuel system cleaners actually work? Testing Gumout "All-in-One"

This is the first test in a series of fuel cleaner test I will be performing to see how fuel cleaners work and if they actually work. In this video I tested Gumout "All in one" fuel system cleaner. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment.
I followed the instructions on the container and Gumout fuel cleaner did a great job cleaning the shiny, sludge buildup, but did not work as well as I would have thought on the clumps of hard carbon buildup. It did not clean the cylinders as much as I thought it would since they do say one bottle will clean the engine.

Here is the fuel cleaner I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AYTRU6/ref=as_li_tl?…

What this video taught me is that a boroscope is a better investment than GumOut.

Both Ericthecarguy and scotty kilmer promoted this product but did not do any testing or show any before and after pictures. I like how you are not even being payed and you are taking the initiative to do your own testing and sharing the results with your viewers. Kudos to you ChrisFix. Great video, thank you.

  • @ugxgaming6541
I watched pretty much every single kind of car fixing video/other dumb little projects to cars and I have learned how to rebuild engines as in removing pistons, putting new rings on, replacing head gaskets and much more on YouTube and I feel you are the only one that puts your heart and soul into working on cars, your videos are amazing, keep up the passion for working on cars! I love your drift stang too 😆
  • i think the point of the additive is to remove the soft carbon before it hardens so it needs to be used regurlarly from day 1 not after it accumulates and hardens over 120k miles

I have been working on my cars since I was 16, now 73 ! Have a post-grad degree in science. Chris Fix does the BEST videos of the best projects. Period. Thanks.

This mazda must run like a dream because this guy does alot of videos on this car 😂
  • I'm not a car guy but my takeaway from the fuel additive tests is that it's a slow process. You won't see huge immediate improvement. But if used at each fillup over the course of a vehicle's lifetime compared to one where it wasn't used, you'd see definitive results. You won't clear a mountain of carbon overnight. But you can over time. Or even prevent it from forming in the first place. I'm convinced enough from your videos to start using the stuff. Great videos all around. Thanks, I've learned a LOT.

MrTrustafox I agree and disagree. I did say at the end during my discussion of the results that this test was for carbon deposits because that is what I can physically test for and it is also an important part for cleaning engines. The gumout bottle showed before and after pictures of the valves and cylinder heads with carbon deposits before and none after so this test is valid for testing their claims. At the same time, this product might clean injectors and probably prevents corrosion but that wasnt what I was testing. I would not consider that this product "may be" a better product than I show because their claims on the bottle. If they claimed that this was just an injector cleaner, then sure, I would agree, but they say this is a carbon deposit cleaner too (for piston heads). See where I am coming from?
  • this was the first treatment. I'm quite sure after a couple more treatments will work a little better.keep in mind this was put in an engine for the first time in 120k+ miles on it.
  • I’m wondering if anyone has ever tracked the affects of a cleaner on a clean engine over time, to see if it prevented any build up?
  • @urkoolUncle
Thanks for sharing this, Chris!!! I'm ignorant about many things car-engine; very low in trust with many service centers. Enjoyed watching the live, objective test.

***** It gets more like 17mpg during the winter but good estimate! I am going to test the techron so stay tuned! And, I am not running paint thinner though my engine lol
  • @WPXTacoMan477
Much love Chris, thank you for the time and efforts put into your videos, always!
  • @Lucas-tr9hh
ChrisFix should do a video where he takes the head off and uses a plastic scraper to get rid of the carbon
  • @lahotboy
Hey Chris thanks for the video I'll look for your follow-up video but I know it will take more than one treatment to really see a difference in the deposits. But you did an awesome job show the details... you rock man!
  • @CyanSkies
Chris, this has got to be one of THE most thorough videos I've seen on this topic. Your use of the camera with pictures before and after were priceless. I'm not a mechanic but have basic working knowledge and this video cleared things up for me. Despite the results, I'll still use Gumout for my '99 Jeep and see how it goes. I can only assume that repeated use of Gumout might get the heavier stuff out over time. Thanks for the video and consider me a subscriber!
  • @OnlyBlix
Based on the product description and the results shown here by Chris, it definitely seems to be a worthwhile investment to make this part of your oil change routine. It seems like it will prevent carbon build-up in the long run.
  • @Megasxlr77
Amazing Timelapse Chris . Prayers for you brother
  • @klaytonpavlik
Great video! Very informative but I do honestly think your expectations were too high. Those thick carbon deposits are a pain to get off if you’re not scrubbing/thoroughly washing them. For a fluid running through the engine I think it did well
