Lyrics

I saw a girl on a Northern dance floor
She looked sixteen, she could have been more
I went to her thinking only of romance
But when the band played, man, I didn't stand the chance
All she wanna do was

Dance, dance, dance, you ought to see her dance
Dance, dance, dance, move over, give her a chance
Well, the people all stood around
Watching her lay it down
She could dance, dance, dance the night away

I tried to show some genuine affection
Could be a chance of a close connection
I didn't know she was there for just one thing
'Cos when the band played, man, you ought to see her swing
Swing down easy

Dance, dance, dance, you ought to see her dance
Dance, dance, dance, move over, give her a chance
Well, the people all stood around
Watching her lay it down
She could dance, dance, dance the night away

And when the dance was nearly over
I decided I was really gonna show her
I took a drink and I went to join the fun
That's when the fun had just begun
And when the band played, man, I was second to none

Dance, dance, dance, you ought to see me dance
Dance, dance, dance, move over, give me a chance
Well, the people all stood around
Watching me lay it down
'Cos I could dance, dance, dance the night away
Dance, dance, dance the night away
Dance, dance, dance the night away

Dance, dance, Watusi baby
Dance, dance, funky mofa
Dance, dance, read your Sunday papers
Dance, dance, Desperate Dan's
Dance, dance, shake it, baby
Dance, dance, rock n roll
Dance, dance, see you later ....

"Read your Sunday Papers" at the end always amuses me. As they're referring to an incident that got them in the Sunday papers but far from hurting them, it meant they were back in the news... The papers said they didn't expect that behaviour from a group that promoted the boy next door image.... Marmalade's reply "who knows what the boy next door does, when he thinks no one else is watching".... Just Brilliant.

One of the first 45s that I bought. About 50p. Well worth it in any rock collection. Great guitaring riffs and drum beat. Heard this song before Quo, but was also listening to early Sabbath, Purple and Led Zep. Reminds me of my youthful days. Marmalade were a great band.

Those are some good boys. How precious to see that smile on Dean Ford’s and watching him dance around. That guy was a gem. The whole band is awesome.
  • Had forgotten this one-what a great song, super guitars, drums & rustle of the tambourine with wonderful harmonies. Just fab x

I was lying on my bed and this song came into my head. I have not heared this since it was released. How the heck did this song just jump into my head after all these years. Lucky for me I knew the words so it was easy to find. I don't remember it rocking like this though.
  • You really can't do any better than Marmalade. I got into them in a big way 20 years ago. My evening ritual was to watch hockey games on TV and sing and then put Marmalade on afterwards. I heard this song for the first time around then and I went "Wow what a cool song!" It's stayed like that regarding my tastes. I listen to a lot of music, but it has to be melodic. If that goes out the window leave me out!

OMG 1969, how can this just jump into my head after all these years? No way I heared it on the radio, no one ever plays this.
