Venus in Astrology: Meaning Explained

Published 2021-08-20
Discussing the meaning of the planet Venus in astrology, and explaining what it signifies in a birth chart, with astrologers Becca Tarnas and Chris Brennan.

Venus is traditionally thought to signify things like beauty, love, relationships, desire, sensuality, romance, harmony, pleasure, art, marriage, and other topics.

This is the fourth installment in our series on each of the planets, where we do a deep dive into their meaning in astrology.

We anchored the discussion by reading through a series of excerpts about Venus from different ancient and modern astrologers, including Vettius Valens, Abu Ma’shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas.

We then used these passages as jumping off points for an extended discussion about some of the deeper meanings of Venus, and the role that it plays in birth chart interpretation.

  • Let us know how Venus is placed in your chart (sign, house, aspect), and how that has worked out for you!
  • I love how this was posted on Venus day and while Venus is in libra !
  • Her energy is so beautiful, you can tell she really embodies that Venus energy and is connected with her, it's like this subtle aura around her.
  • @azurastrologue
I love the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote "The earth laughs in flowers", thanks for sharing Becca!
  • Venus' rulership over Libra and Saturn's exaltation there reminds me so much of the medieval "ars moriendi" or "ars bene moriendi" - the art of good, or beautiful dying. Libra season is when nature starts preparing for winter, it's the beginnings of decay (Saturn). Nature laughs in flowers, but it weeps and mourns in falling leaves. And it's so much in the nature of Venus to find beauty and grace even there.

I love the way she explains the archetype of Venus and her particularity when it comes to word choice. She even mentioned Ọṣun and referred to her, correctly, as an òrìṣà. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
  • @raevt
I love the way Becca elucidates her points. An eloquent speaker who leaves no stone untouched.

The Astrology Podcast drinking game: Every time Chris mentions Valens, take a drink. When he says "Vettius Valens" take two drinks. Try to survive 😂
  • @velmathepelmar
Wow! you brought in Venus herself for the talk. She (Venus) has such a melodious voice and poetic expression, so fitting. So great to hear all the other creative expressions of Venus too. So much appreciation to you both. Star Blessings Vx

  • I am so grateful for this content and this youtube channel. It's difficult to find good quality and free astrology stuff on the internet, especially if you're a total beginner. I really appreciate that you're always trying to explain everything in the simplest terms possible. Looking forward to watching this video and finding out more about the archetype of Venus. I recently watched the episode with Arielle Guttman, where she talked about the concept of Venus Star Point, which was very interesting, but at the same time a bit confusing for me. My Venus is in Scorpio and combust the Sun (and it's house placement doesn't help, as well).
  • Love this episode. Thank you so much for this thorough discussion. Becca is a wonderful guest and I'd be happy to see her more. Personal fact that no one asked for, my name "Danika"(not my spelling but closest comparison) means morning star/venus.
  • Just for clarification, the morning star of Venus is the warrior. When we interpret this in a native's chart, we might consider, as one expression of the archetype, that this placement denotes a tendency for the native's values to be readily seen---they herald the Sun, leading and setting before the Sun. This would be true for any planets that reach the Western horizon prior to the Sun. The evening star, setting after the Sun, is more receptive/reflective, so the native's values may be something we learn on closer, longer contact. Also, Aphrodite was seen to be born on the Greek island of Kythera (where she emerged from the foam of the sea and the island came to be), associated with "bringing into form", perhaps leading to our association of Venus with the beauty of form and design and with Saturn being exalted in Libra. Thank you Chris, for your generous, excellent gifts of scholarship and interview skills, for sharing them with us. We're so blessed to have your channel as resource.
  • Thank you for the comments on Beyonce's Pluto-Venus-Jupiter and the celebration of beauty that historically hasn't been celebrated! Brilliant ep. Becca makes learning a soothing endeavor, even her voice!
