A tip when using putty. After the install, run the hot water into each side and retighten as the putty will soften a bit.

I have never once taken apart a fixture using plumbers putty where it wasn't dry, cracked, and leaking.

Only time ever had an issue with Plumbers Putty was on a thin stainless steel metal sink with a large oversized garbage disposal. It vibrated that thin sink and eventually caused the seal to leak. I use silicone on jobs like that now. Other than that putty 👍 I hate having to remove silcone

30 years ago I used putty , frowned on silicon. Nowadays, read for that the past 29 years I use silicon. Prior to my days the old timers used putty mixed with paint which would set like gun metal. They never leaked but were nigh on impossible to remove wastes or even the taps they’d clag then in with , silicon is a breeze to remove compared to paint n putty

Silicone will never leak. By the time you connect your drains you’ll be able to test the work.

Plumbers putty by a mile Its ready to go instantly vs 30 minute wait for silicone Its easier to use and clean up Its cheaper Silicone might have a slightly lower probability of leaking in 10 years long after anyone remembers who did the install, but at that point who cares

I'm a plumber, but i came here solely to read the comments because this topic and the SharkBite topic elicit the most epic plumber arguments... It's like sibling rivalry in these comments sometimes... "Hey BOI... Why do you use that sticky goo when you could use this less sticky tan goo".... (<--- you know what voice to read this in if You're subbed to that channel)

Some bathroom sinks will leak using putty. Especially with these newer models. Some manufacturers specifically silicone.

Plumbers putty you can test right away. But eventually it hardens and cracks. Silicone has a cure time but I think lasts longer than the putty

I wouldn't trust Silicone as thin as it is especially after tightening the Strainer down there wouldn't be much left under it to keep leaks out, just my plumbing opinion.

If neither is available silicon or plumbers puty, someone commented to use bubble gum, but if there's none, as last resort you could try a wad of buggers, just saying.
