This is good encouragement for me, as a parent, to do what seems reasonable, even though it's not widely accepted now. I am compassionate, but also will not give in when my child expresses big emotions.

Our parents and their parents, while not perfect, had a much better way of dealing with stuff like this. Had I acted up in the store like the example she gave, there would have been a smack along with the "no, you're not getting anything" if I had thrown a tantrum. Sorry if that offends people, but even scripture aligns with that. "Suck it up" was what we used to say in the military, and unfortunately there are a lot of people now who don't understand that attitude. Sometimes you just have to suck it up when times are hard, and just bear down and take it. Teaching your kids resilience sometimes is hard, but when they understand those things, it will mean that they will learn how to deal with difficult situations rather than throw in the towel.

This was excellent advice on how to help our children and grandchildren regulate their emotions and, hence, help to create resilience in them.

For some kids Mom firmly saying “ Stop” & not being pleased with them is enough to teach them that poor behavior doesn’t bring a desired result. For other children there needs to be a consequence of some type that impacts them enough for them to realize acting up in public isn’t ok. If you need to carry out that consequence at home- Be consistent and follow through Moms.💗 Don’t carry out any consequence with anger or lack of control but misbehavior does require a response. Your kids will actually feel more secure when they know their parents mean what they say.🙏
