CAUTION: This episode contains mild swearing.

I’m delighted to welcome James Nestor, the brilliant science journalist and author of Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art back to the podcast. James and I first spoke last September on episode 124    • This DAILY BREATHING TECHNIQUE Will T...  . It was such a popular episode – in fact the YouTube version is my most-watched show! And I knew there was so much more I wanted to talk about with this inspiring guest, who’s such a wealth of knowledge on the untapped potential of breathwork.

  • Been following this advice for eight months now. My sleep is better, my mental state is better, my fitness is better, my health is better. My only regret is i didn’t come across this information earlier in life.
  • Great video. We all strive for financial independence and better life. It’s not difficult in achieving this through the right investment, living frugally, and budgeting. I’m glad I learned early in life to work hard for financial freedom
  • I was using my inhaler every hour for a very bad respiratory problem. (Like a bad case of asthma). Two months ago I very beligerantly started on a "fake belly laughing protocol" and "fake coughing protocol." It was so fake and I really resented doing it, but I forced myself to do it. Well, the first time I did it for around 3 or 4 minutes the vibration released a lot of phlegm, and I coughed-up a lot of it. I actually breathed better and forestalled using the inhaler. I repeated the deep belly laughter every15 or 20 minutes! and phlegm came up from the back of my throat (post nasal) and up from my lungs! I spit it into tissue. I continued doing this protol every 15 minutes all morning as I kept feeling better for awhile and then another spell of shortness of breath would creep in. Well, by the end of the day I had totally substituted fake deep belly laughter and forced fake coughing for the inhaler!!!! A major miracle! It's been two months now, and I barely ever have to do the belly laughing or coughing any more and I only use my inhaler occasionally each week! (Mostly after midnight and I feel stuffy but I'm too sleepy and lazy to do the laughing thing.) It's a miracle! Of course I religiously drink my tonic (turmeric, ginger, garlic, pepper drink) every morning also. I sleep through the night now! I have cut down my use of the inhaler by 95%. That's a huge, serious miracle! By the way, I stopped resenting doing the fake belly laughter thing because it became an automatic reflex after just a few days! PLEASE try it, you will probably be very impressed with it!!

I love how James changes the Telephone colour in the background on different videos 😂👍. But I am so intrigued with this and have changed my breathing habits completely I can now hold my breath for 2 minutes TWO MINUTES!! That’s insane! I feel lighter (sounds strange) and by brain is less foggy! This will be a LIFE CHANGING simple habit for me and I wish I had listened to this YEARS AGO !!! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
  • @Einsteinsmum
Just starting to watch this video and want to comment on the discussion about the lip tape. I’ve been doing this for a while with a little piece of paper tape. Just this simple technique has almost eliminated the daily morning migraines I suffered with for years, yes years. Still watching. Fascinated. Grateful. ✨💖✨
  • I have had not one night of insommnia ever since I began taping about 4 months ago. I have been an insommniac since childhood, having been terrified in catholic school and also was an abused child at home. I did not have insommnia during my years of deep meditative practice either. Then I stopped meditating and it came back. Now, at age 76, after listening to Mr. Nestor, I no longer have insommnia. One thing that has been helpful for me is that I found this blue tape that is very gentle. The reccomended white tape is too harsh for my facial skin. Getting it off is difficult because it hurts a lot. It does not tear or damage my skin but it does hurt when removing it. I get the blue stuff at the drugstore. I am so grateful because this has changed my life. I just read an article about insommnia in the NYT this morning by the way and there was not a mention of Nestor’s book “Breath” or the taping technique. I wonder why? It is Sun. 08/22/21. It’s sort of appalling.

I’ve had Rheumatoid arthritis since I was 10 years old and I’m now 45. I’m starting breath work as well as understanding my gut microbiome and and balancing better and I’ve been on the AIP autoimmune protocol Paleo diet. I’m also doing more yoga and getting back into Tai Chi and Chi Gong and I Chaun. Im also going to teach my daughter the breathing techniques.
  • So interesting! I listened to the conversation with the Irish gentleman the other day and my myotapes arrived today! I'm now practicing nasal breathing while exercising
  • @tlb1098
Absolutely fascinating interview. So sad the medical community doesn't understand the incredible benefits of the simple art of breathing.

I love this episode! My own sleep and immunity has improved since taping. @Dr Chaterjee, would Love to hear more from on Sudarshan Kriya and how it’s different from Tumma and Wim Hoff as he had a very therapeutic experience of drowning in sweat after kriya which is fascinating!. Also, please interview Emma Sepalla who has been researching breathwork and author of the happiness track.
  • 24:30 Unlocking my body's pharmacy? I really like the sound of that!❤ Crohns, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Depression...🙏🙏
  • Yesterday morning before getting out of bed I tried one of Wim Hof’s breathing practices. I did it again this morning. Afterwards, my meditation was noticeably smoother.
  • @lisengel2498
Great wisdom that we need to remember and rediscover - 🙏🦎🍀💚
  • @lorill2631
Thank you so much for this interview. I’m still listening and am just thrilled with the attention to the breath work. I’ve practiced Yoga led by breath work and continue to learn. Love his quote, I’m loosely quoting, Eastern medicine will show you how to live and Western Medicine will keep you from dying. Lastly, love the exploration and open mindedness as well as science based facts that should be respected as you act on changes. Thanks again for providing this excellent information.
  • Ever since I read Jame’s book, I keep noticing this patterns in society. Only few people will care about the wisdom

  • I have begun using blue tape on my mouth while working around the house and doing my artwork as it assist me in slowing down my mind chatter. 💛
  • Exactly. We’ve focused on the shortcomings of anecdote, but we’ve forgotten about its value. To our detriment.
