What substance abuse was to earlier generations, behavioral addiction is to those of us living in the technology-obsessed digital age. In his ground-breaking analysis of this new and rampant phenomenon, Alter, author of Drunk Tank Pink and an NYU professor of marketing and psychology, analyzes our seemingly helpless attraction to video games, social media, and email. Putting today’s compulsions in historical context, he lays out a history of changing notions of addiction and draws on the latest research in cognitive science, marketing, and software design to show exactly what happens in our brains when we engage with a device, and offers advice about how we can regain control of our machines and our lives.

Great book. Maybe the greatest book I've ever read
  • Recently had an habit of looking into youtube for a channel that makes guides about a game, mmorpg, that i used to like when i was a kid, and guides you how to improve your game (more money/h, leveling up, new meta)... sometimes, when i experienced some tension or overwhelming doing my thesis, i just thought about oppening its channel or these possibilities that it offered and how i could do it too... installed and unistalled the game many many times.
