Joan Beckow Legacy Project - May The Words, excerpt (Live In-Studio at Canterbury Music Co, Toronto)

Published 2022-04-26
Who is Joan Beckow??

Not all remarkable creators get the spotlight they deserve during their lifetime, and the Joan Beckow Legacy Project (supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council) exists to highlight and spread the musical works of prolific, brilliant, and TOTALLY under-celebrated composer, Joan Beckow, who passed away at age 88 in January 2021. You might not yet know her name, but it’s no stretch to say that Bernstein, Sondheim and Beckow comfortably belong in the same sentence.

Are you moved by this beautiful music? Are you a champion of under-represented voices? If so, help us complete this beautiful, posthumous, DEBUT double-disc recording of Joan Beckow's work plus documentary with your support through our Indiegogo campaign link: igg.me/at/joanbeckowlegacy ❤️🙏

(Campaign ends on May 6, 2022, so don't wait too long! 😃)

Beckow’s compositions have been performed on stage hundreds, even thousands of times, but never in her 50+ year career was her music professionally recorded in studio, so this project will produce Beckow’s debut album, to be released posthumously. Joan has been adjacent to exceptional artists-turned-celebrities throughout her career, starting with her long-time musical collaboration with best friend and UCLA roommate, @CarolBurnettShow. Beckow was also mentor and vocal coach of @michaelbuble, yet always remained modest in the pursuit of her OWN work.

And now we need YOUR help to finish the project and put Beckow’s music on the map! (and on the internet for the first time!) 22 songs, 30 musicians, recorded on two coasts for a double-disc album, under the mother/daughter music-direction duo, Wendy Bross Stuart (Vancouver, via New York), and Jessica Stuart (Toronto, via Vancouver). The project also includes the production of a documentary film on Beckow’s life (directed by Ron Stuart), the creation of a website to celebrate Beckow's work and several live performance videos to be released as singles, filmed during the actual recording sessions of the album.

Joan Beckow’s work DESERVES to be heard, performed and fallen in love with on a world scale. If you’re in a position to, we hope you’ll consider contributing generously (and receive some fantastic perks listed on the right of the screen in the process!), and if you’re not in a position to donate, we could still really use your help to spread the word about Joan’s incredible story, her inspired music and our heart-fuelled project. ❤️

  • Sorry I didn't know about this while the indigogo campaign was still going on, I definitely would have wanted to help in it. But glad that it worked out and look forward to seeing the documentary when it's available to a wide release.
  • Oh, so many delicious, precise harmonies even in this little snippet. What a joy it must have been to be a part of performing and recording them. I will look for the finished recordings!
