Seal Rescued from Heavy Hook

Publicado 2021-11-06
It is easy to imagine the seal's pain when the weighted fishing hook in its mouth swings from side to side, ripping into his lip more and more every time it bounces around. The hook was intended to catch snoek, but like so many others, it ended up in the ocean instead, ready to hurt animals.

The rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia have dealt with an unprecedented amount of hooks this year and they have been able to refine their rescue system. They restrain the animal and Naude cuts the tip of the hook with a bolt cutter. The hook can easily be pulled out now and the rescuers release the seal. They go straight for the next rescue, a big seal bull with a big cut around his neck. 🦭

I know how hard it is when you find a dead seal with an entanglement. It's crushing. But remember that without you guys doing what you're doing everyday, there would be hundreds on seals dead from entanglement. What you do matters! It matters a lot!❤️

You've gained so much experience, you can now do rescues in very short time and causing minimal stress to the seals. The hook and line removals went smoothly because of it (and your new tools!). I'm happy to hear the pup survival rate is much higher this year. As the poor dead seal at the end presumably died at sea, it one was out of your reach to help but of course it made you sad anyway. Always remember though, you do so much good, you save so many lives. Thank you all, dedicated OCN team members.

Бедные животные какие муки терпят за что. Ребята милые родные спасибо Вам. Дай Бог Вам силы здоровья.

Please don't blame yourselves when you find an entangled seal dead on the beach. You can't be there 24/7 to free all of them. Just take comfort in the fact that this year alone, 600 seals are alive that would not have been without your intervention. Thank you for caring so much and saving as many as you have. ❤🦭

The hooks in seals distress me most of all, but the team has become very proficient in removing them. The release ropes and new tools work so well and the teamwork is amazing. Thanks so much OCN for saving the entangled seals.

Seeing that dead seal with the line still attached, just goes to show the World that the sea's need to be respected more and what a very important job you sadly have taken upon yourselves to do. Thanks to all your team with all my heart.. Hug.

Thank you for showing us that not all the seals get rescued. It helps us all to remember how important this work is and how important it is not to further pollute the oceans.
  • You guys are amazing. I can't stop watching your videos. When I see the suffering of these poor seals it makes me ashamed to be human. I live in Northumberland, England on the coast and we have several seal colonies near us. Inspired by you I'm going to start walking our beaches to pick up rubbish, plastic etc and will encourage others to do the same. I'll certainly be taking my grandchildren along. Its not much but after seeing what you have to deal with I can't just sit here and do nothing. Thank you for all you do.

In the last year, the team has become a well prepared team. I have watched all of you learn and grow into the awesome team you are now. Thank you for letting us go on this journey with you.

It’s so sad to see these precious seals suffering so much. It’s hard to encounter a dead seal due to a fishing line. But I also think about how many more lives would be taken if you weren’t there rescuing them from agony and death. The rescues are getting quicker and less stressful for them too thanks to Germany and all other donations. You guys really are so amazing. Thank you. God Bless you and your seals 🦭💔❤️‍🩹🙏♻️

    '' You can't believe your luck, can ya? '' - Exactly! ❤️
  • Poor seal he must have suffered so much, thank-you for rescuing him you men are true heros.
  • @sarahstrong7174
Seal thinking life is really unfair, "I have got this blooming hook stuck in me & now these creatures my mother warned me about have caught me". Sudden puzzling relief when the humans release them.
  • @WDC_OSA
Two beautiful rescues. Even though you can’t save them all, your team is working wonders
