Originally, this measure was intended to allow the emergency engagement, in the event of conflict, of foreign personnel who were not required to provide proof of their civil status. It made it possible to recruit foreign volunteers from the two great wars who came to shed their blood to defend France.

I met a Foreign Legion unit in Saudi Arabia back in 1991. They were such nice people and respectful. They truly exude pride and esprit de corps. I often wonder if any of them are still in, but probably not, since it's been 30+ years.

I'm a retired USAF NCO...there is only vague comparison I can make to the Legion training They have my deepest respect.

I met one FFL Vet...was in French Indo China early 1950s...as a 16 year old he was scooped up by SS Viking troops and eventually surrendered to the US...then he joined the Legion

I served in both the British and Rhodesian army and saw active service in both, but I take my hat off to the Legion, they are tough men and that Spanish Legion Warrant Officer is as tough as they come.

in 1984 I was on USS John Hancock. We pulled in to Djibouti for a few days. We met some Foreign Legion members and shared a meal and drinks. Good times spent with great people. en 1984, j’étais à bord de l’USS John Hancock. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à Djibouti pour quelques jours. Nous avons rencontré des membres de la Légion étrangère et partagé un repas et des boissons. De bons moments passés avec des gens formidables.

Very nice, i like that training. I was once an officer of police force by lateral entry. I'd gone an officer's training course gor 6 months not as rigid with that kind of tesining, but still its a training . I like that training very much people. Take that as carrier in life of jeing trained, das happens once in a life. Bravo.
