Many of us burn the candle at both ends, as we stay up late into the night to study, work or have fun. But going without adequate sleep carries short- and long-term health consequences. In this seminar, Harvard Medical School sleep experts illuminate the importance of getting a good night’s rest and demystify how much sleep is needed and why it’s so vital to keep our bodies at their best during every hour of the day.

  • I noticed every time my sleep is disturbed, my hypertension goes crazy, in spite of my meds, and my temper gets a lot worse. When I get enough sleep, my mood is a lot better and blood pressure is normal.

2 years on doing night duty knocked me. Took me two years to get back my normal sleep patterns. Now sleep 9 wonderful hours a night. Bliss

For some people the really deep stages of sleep come early in the morning. Hence the really good deep sleep up until noon. I like that he said getting too much sleep is a myth.

That’s why Daylight Saving Time must end as people’s sleep patterns are interrupted twice a year because of a law passed by the politicians.
  • The tips are great. Also, try having a routine the last 30 minutes before going to sleep such as putting the phone down, turning off the computer and getting some water. Your routine can vary, but doing this every day will let your mind and body know it's time to fall asleep. It also helps to listen to some soothing music HINT HINT WINK WINK*.

I fell asleep to this lecture about how important sleep is at 1:00am last night. What irony and coincidence
  • When I was a kid, I didn't like sleeping at all and just liked to stay up all day playing. But all of that has changed since I was about 14 15 years old. Since then, I have realized that sleep is very important, if I don't get enough sleep, I will not be able to stay awake to do anything, and I will always be tired. Now I love sleeping but because of work, I rarely get a good night's sleep
  • Loved the lady saying to start school later. YESSSS!!! I absolutely KNOW i would have done better in school if I'd had adequate sleep, but I had to work to help my family survive. I worked the swing shift all the way thru high school, getting home about midnight or 1:00 a.m. If I could have just slept in in the morning, it would have helped SO much. I might even have managed to graduate 🎓 😅

Wondering late at night, coming across this talk.. honest to god.. the irony of how it lets me sleep in 15 minutes.. This is my go-to video before I want to sleep.
  • One of my dreams when I was in Uganda was to study at great universities like Harvard. Thanks for sharing such crucial info here. I can't agree more that sleep is very important to me. My body reacts if I don't get enough sleep.

Next time anyone feels sleepy behind the wheel, if you can't pull over to sleep in your car, try singing along with something on the radio. Has kept me awake every time.
