Is the GT S-Series Worth $3,200?

Just over 500 miles later, I'm reflecting on my decision to buy the $3,200 Onewheel GT S-Series. This is the new Onewheel board by Future Motion. $3,200 plus tax, plus accessories is a lot of money. And I already had a board that I was plenty happy with, the original Onewheel GT. Now that I've owned both for a while, I have more perspective about their differences. And to be honest, owning a more powerful board makes me more aware of the Onewheel GT's weaknesses and deficiencies. It's hard to ride the GT S-Series regularly, then go back to riding the Onewheel GT. They are in a different class of performance.

Here's the thing – the Onewheel GT is plenty of board. It's a good all around performer and is top of the class for range. However, it's probably best for you to do the math on how much range you need if you're struggling to decide between the two boards. Since the GT S-Series has enough range for 99.9% of my rides, I get to enjoy a lighter board, in terms of weight, that gets me everywhere I want to go, and does so faster. And the torque/speed advantage is useful for safety and for passing others without running into pushback.

If $3,200 isn't within your budget, don't buy this wheel. Don't demo it. Don't try your friend's board. There is a bit of hedonic adaptation at play with all of these new products. The new thing becomes your new baseline. And there will always be another new thing on the horizon to replace your current thing. Be grateful for what you have, live within its limitations. Put your money into other things that will move the needle in your favor so that you can buy more nice things in the future.

Side note: I recorded this video using the DJI Mic 2, connected to my Insta360 X3 with Bluetooth. The audio was a struggle to work with in post. There was a lot of noise and wireless interference. I don't recommend using the DJI Mic 2 with the transmitter-only. When connecting with Bluetooth, you can't record internally and without a receiver, you can't change any of the settings.

This video was made with love. Ride safely out there. I appreciate your viewership.

What videos would you like to see from me?

I think you nailed a frequent use-case for street/bike-path riding - getting around e-bikes. That 20 - 25mph zone really helps make that effortless, instead of playing tag with each other as we hit things that slightly slow us down. Plus I hate riding pushback with someone on my tail. Glad you're loving your purchase! (I'm building a VESC for my level-up from GT, but the name of the game is loving your ride. :) And kudos for the professional video/audio aspects in your content. So good.

hey man, how does the range and battery compare to the XR?
  • I just ordered a pint but I plan on upgrading in a year and will save for the GT-S and pass on the pint to my son. Excellent info !

The released a 2nd firmware update for the GTS a couple days ago. I personally hadn't experienced the nose dip issue at high speed with the 1st update but there must be some fixes in the 2nd update. Gradient tracking is legit though, you'll love it. I know there's some steep hills in DC, I was there in 2018 and there was a few hills I came across on the Capitol bike that I had to get off and walk up because the bike couldn't make it.
  • @Onewheel
Glad you're having a good time out there Don!
  • With Peak Riding Season coming up. Would love to hear from the DC area folks what they think of the GTS especially during group rides.

1:50 - Same. Still waiting to see what the overall feedback on 6161 is.

Hey man, as a new rider, would you recommend starting with a gt? I’m checking used, in that $1700 range. Half the price tbh

When you made your first videos about the GTS you mentioned that you'd continue to ride the GT for longer rides but I knew it'd be difficult to switch and that you'd eventually switch to riding the GTS fulltime.

Slick tire option from factory would be nice... Oh and a lot of people don't mention but basically zero maintenance on these boards, just monitor your tire pressure. ESK8 boards are a different animal, belts, bearings, wheels though have their place but much more attention needed and not so much nose-dive concern/anxiety at any speed.
