Season 02 : Deep South
Episode 01 : Mississippi Appendectomy : Montgomery County, MS

We go to the doctor to be treated for our physical maladies. We have a pain or a lump and the doctor knows how to evaluate our symptoms and ease our suffering . When our doctor recommends a course of treatment for a medical condition, we trust that they have our best interest in mind, wanting nothing more than to make us feel better. Sometimes though, they destroy more of you than they fix.

  • A brave decision to produce this well informed documentary about a topic most people would prefer to pretend didn't happen. I salute you sir.

It's sickening to know that this not only happened in my lifetime, but that it happened very, very recently.
  • As one of many black, African or African-American fans of yours, I’m more than appreciative of your courage in sharing this story of my people’s plight. I’ve been with you since the beginning of This Is Monsters & will continue to be a massive supporter.
  • I found this more disturbing than any episode of this is monsters about actual murder. That last story being so recent really shook me. Humanity truly is lost.
  • @youprettywow
It's really fucked up how the people who want hysterectomies are denied them and the people who want children are forced to have hysterectomies. Why can't people be guaranteed bodily autonomy?

Thank you for sharing the story of my ancestor Fannie Lou Hamer. Pap was my great grandmother on my maternal grandfather's side, 1st cousin. We are so proudnof her and I'm honored to be a relative to her. But let's keep in mind that my mom was about 5/6 when Fannie was sterilized! She just turned 66 on the 20th. This happened in her lifetime and kept happening in her lifetime until she had graduated college! America's true history needs to be taught. We are so proud of the good, yet act like the bad never happened.
  • in the seventies in East L.A. my mom was told that she had cancer and needed an operation. They gave her a hysterectomy and told her she only had 5 years to live. She is still alive. We are positive it was forced sterization.
  • This “Deep South” series is going to be extremely interesting. So far, the first episode is killing it! Good job, guys!

I'm a huge fan of monsters, and have never commented until today. I just wanted to say thank you for covering this story. My family was from the south and we would hear all kinds of stories of women this happened to, and in addition to that I have a cousin who was part the Tuskegee Syphilis Study which was also a violation of human rights. Kiddo's to you sir, and thanks again for covering this story!

Wow I got to 55 years old before I learnt this. I'm shocked it happened and I never heard about it.
  • Having lived on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Rez...Indian Birney, Montana..Thank you for once again shining a light on the dark sinister places and people of our world...the only thing it seems mankind has learned from history is that man never learns from history...

I am a direct product of this happening. I was adopted by my parents at 4 months from Biloxi Mississippi due to my mom being forced to have this done against her will. It was a statewide practice.
  • Jeeze! I'm so glad you did this video. When my Nan moved here from Iceland she was a nurse but because most locals in Washington state looked down on immigrants my Nan could only get a job on the Native reservation. She worked there for only 8 months. She quit because she was in the operation room and witnessed the doctor sterilizing women who thought they were getting gall bladders removed. It bothered her deeply and she cried when she told me about it years later. She said she felt helpless and it put her into a depression for years. The only people who would listen to her were the natives and she told them what was happening to them.

I cannot believe that this is STILL happening!!! What is wrong with people? This is just sick and appalling! It must stop! Oh my goodness
  • @juice_wink
I have great aunts alive today who had to experience this and it's heartbreaking. It not only prevented them from having the family they wanted, it's caused a lot of marital issues. I also strongly believe it's part of the reason they've developed psychological issues almost out of the blue over the years due to the trauma and constant upward battles they've had to face. Even without their own children, the pain still trickles down generations of lineage. It takes a toll on so many.

Oh my god! I’d never heard of this and I’m completely outraged! Motherhood has been the most fulfilling aspect my life, I can’t imagine having that taken away from me, especially in such a heinous manner! Thanks for sharing this important story.

Man, I started crying as soon as you said Eugenics..... I am adopted. My mother was forcibly sterilized when she was 20 in 1958 almost a year after she was married. My dad had epilepsy. They adopted me in 1977. She refuses to talk about it even today. This happened in North Carolina.

Thank you for sharing the dark side of American History that so many would like to see suppressed because it’s extremely unpleasant. I love the way you tackle tough topics with straight up honesty. Thank you 🙏🏾

I swear you are my spirit twin. It's like your venom, is mine! I love both your respect of subject, and your disgust at the subject matter. Dude, you are awesome. Many beneficences to your channels!
