Two 'big problems' facing labour market

AWU National Secretary Daniel Walton says there are currently two big problems facing the economy's labour market.

"Number one: With the borders shut we've had net negative migration over the last couple of years and there is some key positions across the economy where we're struggling to identify people to fill those roles," he told Sky News Australia.

"What we also know is business has become completely addicted and reliant upon short and temporary visa workers coming over to plug temporary gaps.

"They've dropped the ball in terms of training and developing Australians or retraining already employed Australians to fill the roles that we need into the future.

"For every worker that you bring into the country, business should have a requirement to either train an Australian for that role or to help contribute into a fund to develop Australians for future roles going forward."

Two big problems for the Australian Labor market =the Labor and Liberal Governments
  • The biggest problem facing employment is the mandatory jab by WorkCover. Get rid of it and watch how much labour is available to industry.
  • @SD._
There is no labour shortage in this country. There is however, lack of willingness to train up Australians.
  • Hahahs the great resignation in full affect funny how u won't end the emergency powers reap what you've sown putting Australians last with cheap overseas slave Labor isn't the answer

Where i live cherry picking is (was) in full swing. A tiny village at the end of the mornington peninsula. My son, that is unemployed was trying to get a job as a cherry picker. Since the local farmers are screaming for pickers. But no, he can't get a job, because he is unvaxxed!! The farmer is scared to employ him, although he would really like to have an Australian and local person. But he is scared to cop a $165 000 fine! ?...So he, my son stays unemployed, a burden to tax payers! What a crazy system we are adopting! Come  on, Change this shit!!! I guess the packpackers and the chinese/foreigners will get the job instead! DROP THE BLOODY VACC MANDATES!!!
  • Australia is training foreigners but is failing to educate Australians. There was a time when Labor and unions represented australian workers...
  • How naive is this individual? What is the difference between migrant workers and Australian workers? Answer this question before you come up polices that makes no sense. Plus are you saying Australian workers (first world country) workers are less skilled less educated and if so how did we get here? Workers that want to call Australia home like parents came here under the 50 s and 60 s policies, are you suggesting we go back to these policies? The biggest problem we have is labour shortage not energy. Who put all the Red tape on projects in Australia? Both political parties work for their own benefits. They don't care about businesses especially family businesses. They don't care about workers as they see them expendable.
  • Where do we house all the new immigrants in a cardboard box ? Maybe we train up all those on unemployment first
  • Clennell totally missed asking why the ACTU is using the 2-1 policy change on foreign workers to boost union membership.

Most companies want you to be jabbed, so my kids will not have a job until it is dropped.
  • Well three big problems if you include your organisation Daniel!!!

Apprenticeships have almost halved over the last 15 years as per Federal data. Businesses have created this mess, along with the constant overemphasis of going to uni. A bunch of degrees with tens of thousands of debt and funding all unused. Professional degrees should be seen with the same respect as professional trade certificates.
  • Many of the countries which are traditional senders of immigrants have falling fertility rates, increasing employment and standards of living and competition for places where they can emigrate to. Fixing any labour market using immigrants is short sighted because the supply is dwindling. Investment in productivity is crucial. Many stores haven’t adopted electronic shelf signage which means weekly sales need employees to spend hours putting up sale tags. There are robots that can scan shelves to generate pick lists for stockers but instead stores have over worked employees making lists of what is not on the shelf and then checking the back room to see if it is there. New suction cup grabbers can let robots remove and replace products quickly to check expiration dates but humans spend huge amounts of time doing this by hand and squinting at the expiration dates to keep the stock rotated and remove out dated products. If you want to deal with a labour shortage, make investments in productivity tax deductible. This would also reduce the cost of living as it would reduce waste and reduce prices.
  • Once all the migrants come back, they will fill the shortage and there will be even less work. More people will struggle harder then ever and it will take longer for people to find employment.
