The Chancellor Rachel Reeves says it is time to ‘level with the public’ about the economic inheritance left by Tories after finding a £20 billion black hole in the public finances. So could this be setting us up for more tax rises?

As Reeves is set to axe rail and road projects to plug the budget shortfall, Camilla and Gordon Rayner are joined by Andrew Griffith, Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation & Technology, to react to the chancellor's plans.

Plus we'll have the latest on the Conservative leadership race as Kemi Badenoch announces her bid. And after an Olympics double win, is Andy Murray Britain’s greatest athlete?

Hunt hid £35bn of unfunded promises from the OBR. So attempting to accuse Labour of lying, 'because they had access to the OBR figures' doesn't work.

Well the obvious next step is taxing the people who have gotten more wealthy by multiples over the last decade under the tories, but that isnt something your papers owners want to even put in the public mind as a viable option

Tories or Labour both will end up taking it out on the poorest and most vulnerable in society, while of course looking after their rich mates and likely enriching themselves off government contracts.

No one should ever take a single thing seriously from a person that uses the word 'Holibobs'

Economy has been trashed for a while, pretty much since the GFC in 2007/08. They chose to kick the can into the long grass with QE. Also the covid spend: Absolutely biblical amounts of money, a lot of it for nought, a lot of it pilfered away by people with low morals. But definitely the straw that's brought all those long kicked chickens home to roost a bit sooner than anyone wanted. Labour won't do any better, none of the political class are capable in this regard. And besides, I wouldn't be surprised to find their hands completely bound between rocks and hard places. Someone, at some point is going to have to do something really unpopular. Its like a game of pass the parcel, but the parcel is a bomb with a dicky timer. Our economy isn't performant enough, we're a low productivity country and the state requires vast sums of money to barely stand still. There is no chance of moving forward whilst we build a hollow economy of deliveroo riders and amazon warehouse operatives whilst we let the very same businesses syphon the money out of the country.
  • the telegraph is the tory rag following the daily mail, why bother with finding new leader for the tories, they are a bunch of crooks,
  • Wait a minute here. The tories have been in power for 14 yrs and none of these issues were addressed by them. Labour in power for 4 weeks and u r down their throat. Fcking incredible!
  • @sasserine
Reeves hasn't cancelled any infrastructure projects, because they would have to have been begun, or at least funded, for them to be 'cancelled'. The Tories never set asude funding for any of these commitments, therefore there's nothing to be cancelled.

Sorry the reason for this is the pandemic bail out and closing the country down and what would have Labour have done? Everything plus plus how quickly we forget.
  • @benh715
Yes, the Tories trashed the economy by locking down so hard during the pandemic. Labour would have gone harder.
  • @peterbrailey1788
Remeber how many have died at the Tory's hands while the Telegraph watched and just applauded it all

I wonder if £8 million pounds a day on illegal immigrants has anything to do with it ..and it was labour that opened the borders
  • @fighne
Best read the OBR letter, she had the smoking gun!
  • @nickquelch2636
This was a really balanced and nuanced discussion 🤥😂 Telegraph is hilarious.

    Lockdown and immigrants and Ukraine.
  • @annesharp3010
Rachel Reeves would save millions per day by not having to pay for illegal immigrants in hotels etc. Perhaps they should all reduce their salaries that should help. If they are penalising pensioners with taking away their winter fuel money. We are a charitable country but if needs must they can reduce some of that money too until things improve. Rachel needs to stop going on about lack of money because their track record was dismal.!!
  • @karinburt8168
Stop blaming the Torys it's embarrassing. Labour does not have the interests of its citizens at heart. Give all the money to foreign countries and immigrants, and go on to punish those who worked to give governments their money.
  • @karinburt8168
Conservatives have the main challenge of making people believe them regarding immigration. 14 yrs of not tackling immigration will not be forgotten, and will be even more imperative after 4 yrs of Labour destroying the national population.
