Licola Road - Glenmaggie to Licola. Historic & Scenic Road Trip

𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 (𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹) 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝟰𝟰.𝟳 𝗸𝗺. A good day trip (247 km each-way) from Melbourne or stay overnight at the Licola Wilderness Village, Caravan Park or at one of the many riverside camping areas.

There is a lot to see and learn, please be ready to 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱. Alternatively, watch it a second time, slowly, by pausing at each slide.

The road from Glenmaggie to Licola, Victoria, was completed in 1913. Prior to that, the area was accessed by a rough bush track suitable for packhorses only.

New settlers entered the wild mountain valley of the Upper Macalister River in the 1840s when the existing bush track was also used as a droving route. Much of the pastoral land opened at that time is now part of the historic and scenic Glenfalloch Station.

Even earlier, Gunaikurnai people used the route for access into Victoria’s mountainous North-East. The junction of the Wellington and Macalister Rivers near Licola was a meeting place.
