Hey, it's Mayim, and I'm so excited to share some of the details from my oldest son's recent Bar Mitzvah! For those who aren't sure what a Bar Mitzvah is and how it relates to the Jewish faith, I talk a little more about that, too. If you have more questions please leave them in the comments!

About Mayim Bialik:
You might know me as Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory or from Blossom but there are so many other parts of me that you might not be aware of! I’m trained as a neuroscientist, I'm a passionate activist, an observant Jew, a perfectly imperfect mother, and I'm a complicated human being like many of you. This is the place where I wear all of those hats - and none of them have a flower on them! ;)

  • You looked so happy and beautiful talking about your son . You can tell how proud you are of him. Congratulations!

I am Christian but I love the information. Thank you and congratulations to your son. Our differences are what makes our world interesting
  • The passion in your voice when you talk about your sons is absolutely amazing. A truly loving mother.
  • Love her articulation and speech clarity. But more so her passion and carrying the right priorities with no bombast. What a great person she is.
  • I was raised Catholic and in November of 1995 my long time childhood friend who I have known since I was a new born baby had her Bat Mitzvah at 13 years old. The special thing about my friend and I we knew each other since we were babies in the NICU. My friend was born with Down Syndrome and I was born prematurely with a major medical problem. Our incubators were both next to each other in the corner of the NICU. Our parents got to know each other during that time in the NICU and when it came to be our turns to finally go home our parents kept in touch (now this was back in 1982 but hey they exchanged household phone numbers and addresses back then so it was all good). Growing up my friend and I and our families did a lot together. We invited each other to our houses for dinner, birthday parties and since my family is Catholic and my friend's family is Jewish we shared a lot of our religious beliefs, traditions, and learned a lot from one another. In 1995 when my Friend and I turned 13 my friend and her family was going to share one of those Jewish traditions with us, they invited us to my friend's Bat Mitzvah. Being that my friend has Down Syndrome and has learning disabilities, studying hebrew and the torah was going to be a challenge. Thanks to the guidance of her father, her Rabbi, and a lovely and very patient Canter my friend was able to get through her studies. My friend was so determined to become a Bat Mitzvah and that determination payed off. On the day of her Bat Mitzvah she blew us all away. She did an AMAZING job. She made her parents, family, friends, and the whole congregation so so proud.
  • Personally, you tell every story with such love and vigor, I would love to hear all about your religious traditions. As a Catholic, I know my beginnings start with yours. ❤️
  • I am a Muslim but I love learning about Judaism from you ♥️
  • I can see you're so proud of him. I'm not Jewish but I know what an important right of passage it is. Congratulations.🌷✡️
  • Mazel Tov to you and your family. I am Catholic and when my only daughter went through our rites, they were special times, indeed. When she took her first communion at age 7 she was so adorable in her white dress. When she was 13 she was confirmed (became a member of the church). That was really special as she went from being a little girl to a young woman. Thanks for sharing your special time.

I am not Jewish but have been to a number of friend's son's Bar Mitzvahs. I always have found the service to be very emotional and touching. The boys around here complete a project in addition to their Torah lessons. Quite amazing. Mayim, your observations about your son are so adorable. I have a 19 year-old and his transformation into a young man often leaves me breathless with emotion.
  • I am the Event's Coordinator for Capital of Texas Zoo and we had an amazing young man Colton Williams donate his Bar Mitzvah money to the porcupine exhibit and even got to name it Porcupine Point! We are so proud and thankful for him! Just Amazing!
  • One day, your son will see this video and won't stop crying with emotion for the amazing mom he has and for being so so loved❤❤❤
  • Mazel Tov, Ms. Bialik! And, Yasher Ko'akh to your son. May your son stay strong in his faith and be a righteous young man in our community!!
  • what an accomplishment and kudos to you for raising him in a way where he’s planning for his future. you’re killing it as a mama
  • For 17 years from mid-1970s-early 90s, I was Washington, DC area's foremost (and only) Gentile Bar Mitzvah photographer, a totally accidental hobby profession. At one time the rabbi in my town, who became a good friend, and I were comparing notes on who had done more B'nai Mitzvot. I was ahead something like 400-350 (but I worked at most shuls in our area, and he did only his own congregation. It was a chance to learn more about the rich Jewish traditions and not coincidentally my own mainstream Protestant faith. At the time my real job was as a government Arabic translator and I had a Masters in Middle East Studies which naturally included Islam. This rabbi invited me to give lectures to his confirmation class on comparative religion not only on my religion but on elements of Islam as well. I gave up photography when my financial goals for the hobby were met. I had financed my two kids' college educations with the proceeds from this hobby-profession.
  • I'm a Muslim myself but that was pretty informative, I also love the way you sound and look speaking about it, I like how enthusiastic and passionate you are speaking about your son, your religious traditions and faith in general. And also how keen you are on always involving your kids in those traditions, I'd love to do the same when I have my own kids in the future❤️
  • Mayim, could you do more advanced/ elaborate videos on neuroscience, maybe a specific topic each week :)
  • @LaArtsGuy
❤️ Love the passion and joy. I am going through conversion and I find your little pearls and wisdom resonate with me. Thank you for being so open and kind.
