  • Hi Brett McCoy here. I forgot to include more detail. I made the mask back in High School welding class 2014. This has been sitting in my basement ever since! I do have pictures of how the whole thing was made. I never heat treated it or anything by I did get an A in class! My design was based off of a carboard cutout of an Army of Two mask from the game series. I planned to put some type of glass in the eye holes to stop from funneling rounds into the wearer's eyes but never got around to it. It also really was not practical to wear and would probably slam all the force directly into the wearer's chin. I ran into a bunch of issues with sizing and ended up having to redo the eye holes and put in extra metal to close up gaps but I don't think it did to shabby.

We need to see more of this Indonesian guy, his stuff looks really promising

Matt 10 years later: "So today we're having a little test of a W85 nuclear warhead, shooting a medium sized island once, see if it can hold up or get blown to pieces."
  • Just a heads up for any of you aspiring chainmail wearing combatants, chainmail is not in fact intended for blunt weapon protection. It is intended to protect from cutting weapons, crushing and thrusts are very dangerous even when wearing it
  • @M01st_Nu6g3t
"we're gonna hit this with a few more blunt things. Just cause that's what chainmail's for." I know Mat isn't an armor guy, but chainmail was made to defend against slashing armaments rather than blunt or pricing armaments.

This is the second time we've had chainmail on this channel and as cool as this stuff looked, it was, again, butted mail. That stuff is basically for costume purposes only, it can't stop a significant hit from pretty much anything, especially made from copper, you could probably break through that with your bare hands. Would be interesting if Matt got some real steel riveted or welded mail armour and tested that out (perhaps even with a historical gamebson beneath it but that might be expecting a little much) against modern guns. Funnily enough, the reason chainmail was eventually abandoned in favor of plate steel was because of the advent of early firearms: while plate steel could stop them, a musket ball hitting chainmail would cause the links to shatter and basically turn eash shot into a mini frag grenade when it hit you, sending bits of sharp, broken steel into your body along with the bigass lump of lead shot. Seeing just how poorly things would go against modern firearms would be interesting.

to be honest all if those guys but like 1 deserve to win. 1 guy spent 3 yrs on the copper chain mail, the mask and all those welds, grinding and shaping is impressive and that dragon skin was amazing too! Well done all
  • @CaedVT
You should do a collab with the Slow Mo Guys, get a detailed video of how the bullets actually deform/interact with various materials!

As one who makes chain mail, that vest was painful to watch. I have made myself a full hauberk and I powered through and did it in four months. For the longest time, every time I'd close my eyes all I would see chain mail pattern. I also tried a copper chain mail and it did not work bc it was too costly. Kudos to that man.
  • @Grand_PrixGTP
The “work harder next time” had me laughing almost as much as when the pickaxe straight murdered that mannequin🤣
  • @BrOckSams0n
I'm so glad you used hand tools on that chain mail and gave it a fair showing. Also, felt a little like OG demo ranch days. Well done and thanks for the content.
  • @cgmehta8264
I love how the chew stick progressively gets larger and larger as the montage goes on. 🤣
  • @Deathwatch_2002
This skit was top-of-the-line. The crippling depression part was hilarious.
  • the way your wheat/grass kept growing in your mouth had me not only captivated, but excited, focused, and ready and hardened to learn. thank you for this amazing demonstration and precise tutorial and learning video for education.
  • @XHunkerX
honestly i hope the slow-mo cutaways never stop. every one of them is amazing.
  • @PSYCHOxFROST
Chainmail is to stop slashing, contrary to what you see in pop culture films it had gambeson (thick tightly woven fabric) underneath to help dissipate blunt force. So whilst I don't think copper would make for a good chain mail (it was the bronze age, the tin was added for a reason) I don't think it's quite as ineffective as shown
  • @chrisgonyou
YASS! Thanks for using my chainmaille on the episode!
  • @maxtugger1859
Demolition Rach never fails to make me smile. Probably the best show on YouTube 😉
  • This has probably been said by many other people, but I was told that chainmail is specifically designed to stop slashing motions. Stabbing and large blunt force are effective weapons against chainmail. As shown in this perfectly well-done video.
