The Metal Archives is a great resource... but man is it inconsistent even with it's own rules.

*Edit- Apparently Russian Circles got added to The Archives with their last album "Gnosis"... even though they've been heavy for years. Better late than never I guess.

Guess the metal archives admins are the original reddit mods

As an encyclopedia, ideally it should include more from the broader genres and especially core. There is so much crossover, there's no reason to exclude it

The problem with metal archives is there always gonna have biases based on personal taste plain and simple
  • The Archives are full of people who think Vulgar Display of Power killed metal and it’s been dead since 1992. Not exactly the best authorities on what is and isn’t metal if you ask me.
  • @paradoxrift2600
Fun fact: Meshuggah is only on the Archives because of their first album and early demos which are tech thrash. So apparently albums like Chaosphere and Nothing "aren't metal" according to their definition, which is baffling.

They don’t even have Last Days of Humanity. They have Carcass, Pharmacist, and Pathologist but not LDOH.

Yes, I also use the site all the time, but they have painted themselves to corner with the ridiculous gatekeeping. They don't have Slipknot or Korn, but they have stoner rock, grunge bands, dark ambient and fucking martial industrial bands like Arditi and Puissance. Even Mortiis is in there, give me a break. It's just tired power tripping, as you said. I love the site, but they need to grow the fuck up.

If MA is going to have Deep Purple, Rush, Scorpions, and Thin Lizzy on there, WHERE'S BLUE OYSTER CULT?
  • The other day I saw Killing Time, a 100% nyhc band, is on Metal Archives. Makes no sense considering what they won’t put on there.. They do have some metallic leanings but no more or less than Hatebreed etc.. 🤷‍♂️
  • I love Thralls. But what makes Thralls, Thralls. Is that it has cool open-minded people behind it. I am not unrealistic to the idea that “Metal,” is comprised of, solely, individuals that are like-minded.

Thanks for this one guys! BTBAM is the one that's always irritated me. They are prog metal, through and through. So aggravating.
  • I also wish they brought back the tab where it would list tour dates of a band on their MA page, i used that all the time
  • I also have a love/hate relationship with the metal archives. But another resource I’ve started using (alongside the metal archives) is Metal Storm, which is quite a good resource and are not so elitist when it comes to excluding bands. Do you guys also use that resource? Great video btw!!

I feel like some admins on Metal-Archives have real ego problem and lack knowledge of music history. I have argued with one, guy even argued that hardcore punk scene was a huge influence on Slayer and the whole thrash scene. These guys cannot accept simple reality that hardcore impact on metal exists at least from arrival of thrash metal hence their crusade against anything -core is not only ridicolus and inconsistant but lost cause from the very beginning.
  • As a deathcore and metalcore fanatic it’s seriously baffling how suicide silence isn’t on. I do feel some of these bands missing is very personal almost. As if the bands hurt them hahah
  • @RWalters81
BTBAM, Tesseract, and Kvelertak omissions are crazy.
  • @LordKoehler
Do you guys think Rammstein should be on the archives?
  • @SimS-uh2fg
"No hard rock bands that skirt metal" ...and then they have Rush.... A legendary band, one of my favourite ever, don't get me wrong....but I have always found it really strange.
