now she cares about free speech

Good decision. No one wants to hear personal political opinions at their graduation.
  • She posted that people should "reject the hegemonic efforts to demand that Palestinians accept that Israel has a right to exist as a . . . Jewish state." That's pure antisemitism.

Why didn't USC just have her submit a copy of the speech ahead of time for review, to ensure there was no language that was inciting violence or hateful? Seems like USC could have handled that better. But, this is the university where their most famous alum murdered 2 people.....

The problem with most of the pro-Palestine activists is they refuse to admit Hamas did anything to incite Israel to commit these atrocities. Neither side is innocent, and it seems neither side will back down or consider they might be in the wrong. Furthermore, I have no idea why Iran is getting involved in this. What's up with that??
  • @Tallacus
No one blames Hamas or Iran for their evils
  • I agree with USC. It doesn’t matter who the student is, if they are promoting hate speech.

not entirely a free speech issue. the graduation speech is not an open forum, not a place for unlimited latitude of thought. the university is responsible to varying degrees for what is said. if she were to provoke hostilities and riots causing harm/death to some (or many) or property damage, we would be asking the university why it did nothing to prevent it. given her radical (and horribly ignorant and wrong) opinions and points of view, the school was right to block her speech

On the news, talking about freedom of expression 😂 No one has to host your radical view, sweetheart .

when did a D- intellect become valedictorian standard?
  • @Sparks00psn
I don’t agree with pro Palestinians / pro hamas terroism people, however the answer is not to censor people. The counter to them is to voice your opinion as well. I’m pro free speech 100% regardless of opinion. Truth and honesty and correct opinions will always prevail if people are speaking from places of logic and reasoning and not emotion. Valedictorian should’ve been allowed to speak, and I disagree with the pro Palestinian movement.

Asna, here in US: 1-You are a very intellectually academic and international political savvy Muslim. 2-You are dark-skin from Southeast-Asia. 3-You have studied Palestinian history (Ukraine or Russia would be maintreams) 4-You wear hijab. All of those trades would make Americans uneasy, however, behind you, there are 277,346,378 muslims in Southwest Asia have been supported and proud of your accomplishments. Someday you will have chance to lead them and help unfortunate people like Palestinians, Afghan, Sudanese ...We hope that you keep focus and go forward to reach for the humanity star!

This has everything to do with safety. The valedictorian, the highest ranking academic person, should know that there is a time and place for speaking her beliefs on the subject. Your job is to give an inspirational speech, bidding a final farewell to all students and school as you start your next leg of your journey. This is an extremely tense, volatile subject. I’m going to assume that because of the long history of the conflict, whatever you say will not change anyone’s mind that doesn’t share the same opinion. Talk about world peace, treating all humanity with love and compassion, changing the world for the better…bringing up this specific subject at this moment would only be selfish. Afterwards- go do and say whatever you want.
