Background of the birth of the French language

The direct origins of French come from ancient Roman Latin. With the establishment of the Roman Empire, Latin became the official language of the empire and spread throughout the vast areas of Europe ruled by Rome.

When the Roman Empire conquered Gaul, now part of France, the region's native Celts were speaking their own language, Gallic. The Romans who ruled Gaul established Latin as the language of the ruling class, but over time, the languages ​​and cultures between the natives and the Romans began to influence and mix with each other.

The Latin used by the common people within the empire, unlike Classical Latin, is called Salon Latin or Ordinary Latin. Salon Latin was not standardized, and many variations arose from region to region. These varieties gradually gained unique characteristics through mixing with the original languages ​​of each region, which became the basis for differentiation into today's Romance languages.

Germanic invasion
Around the 5th century, several Germanic tribes (such as the Franks) invaded Gaul after the collapse of the Roman Empire and established the Frankish kingdom. At this time, lexical and cultural influences from Germanic languages ​​also contributed to the development of French to some extent.

Ohuiyala French
By the Middle Ages, a series of Romance dialects derived from Salon Latin existed in northern France (the Ohuilla dialects) and southern France (the Occitan dialects). Among these dialects, the Ohuilla dialect, especially spoken in the Ilainde, Burgundy, and Champagne regions of northern France, developed around Paris and formed the basis of French.

Standardization of Modern French
The grammar and vocabulary of French began to be standardized during the Renaissance in the 16th century, and the establishment of the French Academy (Académie Française) in 1635 further strengthened the standardization of the language. As France's influence expanded, French gained status as an international language, and the French-speaking world spread throughout the world.
